Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6693 — Health
Volume 18 · Letter 190 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu et assume
By the grace of Hashem*,
20 Shevat* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and carries out a sacred mission, Rav Alexander (note 1: Rav A. Bunin Bin Noun, of Raanana. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6668),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 25 Teves*, in which you inform me of your state of health, and especially of your hoarseness. You have consulted doctors, who did not find the cause. They asked you to rest, or in any case to speak less. You detail the difficulties that result from this, in your conduct and in assuming your function. In such a case, one must say, to use the formulation of our Sages*: "The disadvantage is counterbalanced by the advantage" (note 2: The inactivity imposed by the rest is justified by what it will be possible to accomplish subsequently). Thus, even if you suffer a supposed momentary loss by complying with this prescription, your gain will be all the greater thereafter. You will surely not be asked to cease speaking entirely, or perhaps you will need to do so only for a very short time. Likewise, it would be good to ask the doctor you consulted about how to speak superficially — of course only in the physical sense, but not, which Hashem* forbid, morally and deeply. Indeed, for several decades, speakers and, more generally, all those who make extensive use of speech, have been trying to learn to express themselves in this manner, including when they are in good health. Generally, this means that one speaks loudly and with enthusiasm, while employing only the outermost organs of speech, such as the lips and the tongue. Without a doubt, this technique can be of great utility, including in your case, and perhaps even after you recover your health.
You tell me that you are indignant, that you ask yourself why it is so (note 3: When speech is so necessary to carry out the mission entrusted to you). I understand your pain and your difficulties, but, in general, such arguments have little benefit — quite the contrary. They provoke anger and therefore sadness and discouragement, which slows the pace of recovery. And if one wishes to find an interpretation, an explanation for all this, one can say — even if it is only a supposition — that in this way, one points out to the one who undergoes this situation what the goal of education truly is, even if some do not pay attention to it. Indeed, the first and essential objective of every educator is to give his student autonomy, including in the domain for which he receives an education. He must, furthermore, obtain this result as quickly as possible and, of course, without calling into question the fundamental nature of the education.
As far as you are concerned in particular, all of this is quite evident. You must ensure that your students pray with enthusiasm, that they speak of Jewish values with warmth, after having been under your influence for some time. They will "absorb to the point of making others absorb" (note 4: They will influence their friends in this direction) and they will guide the students who arrive at this school after them. You yourself will stand to the side and observe them, in a general manner (note 5: Which justifies the reduction of speech). This is self-evident. Of course, all of this is not meant to justify what has occurred (note 6: The health problems). On the contrary, one must hope that you will recover your strength as quickly as possible and that you will influence your students in the manner just described, without calling into question their free will and with true breadth of spirit. With my blessing to convey good news and for a speedy recovery,
M. Schneerson,
N.B.: You have no doubt organized a Chassidic* farbrengen*, in the appropriate manner, to mark the propitious day — the Hilloula* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, leader of Israel, which was celebrated on 10 Shevat*.
