To my close relative, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yehudah Leib (note 1: Rav Y. L. Slonim, of Jerusalem. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5522),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Motzaei Shabbos*, in which you briefly describe the Chassidic* farbrengens* of recent weeks. Furthermore, you inform me of the establishment of a public study of Chassidus*. May Hashem* grant that, always and every day, you announce to me good news of your communal accomplishments and your personal achievements, the ones depending on the others. Indeed, your lineage (note 2: Tracing back to Rebbetzin* Menuchah Rachel, daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe*, who settled in Chevron*) comes to your aid both in carrying out these activities and in conveying good news of them.

You refer to the proposal I formulated for the customs that should be adopted on the day of the Hilloula* (note 3: Of the Previous Rebbe*, on 10 Shevat*). My letter (note 4: This is Letter no. 885) was written for the first Hilloula*, but I do not see why these practices should be modified in subsequent years, except for a change of a general nature, in accordance with the teaching of our holy Torah* that "one must ascend in the domain of holiness." It follows that, from time to time, one must indeed make an addition to what is written. For all that, one cannot establish fixed rules regarding this change. Each person must consider it according to his own situation, his possibilities, and his means. With my blessing to convey good news,

במענה למכתבו ממוצש"ק, בו כותב ר"פ מההתועדויות בשבועות שעברו, וכן מהתיסדות שיעור לימוד חסידות ברבים.

ויהי רצון שתכה"י יבשר טוב בענינים הכללים ובענינים הפרטים אשר הא בהא תליא, ובפרט שגזע צור מחצבתו מסייעתו בפעילות בזה ובבשורות טובות בזה.

במ"ש אודות הצעתי במנהגי יום ההילולא, הרי אף שנכתב בקשר עם יום ההילולא הראשון, איני רואה טעמים לשינוים בהנהגות אלו בשנים שלאחרי זה, מלבד השינוי הכללי מתאים להוראת תוה"ק דמעלין בקדש, שמזה מובן שמזמן לזמן גם בהאמור צריך להוסיף, אבל בהוספה זו אין לקבוע מסמרות ועל כל או"א להוסיף מתאים למעמדו מצבו יכולתו ואפשריותו.
