By the grace of Hashem*,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Teves*, date of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*, and to the one that preceded it. You tell me that you have been able to trace your lineage (note 1: The addressee of this letter had just discovered that he was a descendant of an unsavory individual) and you draw a connection with the statement of the Tanya*, at the end of the second chapter, according to which "there is no Nefesh*, Ruach*, or Neshamah* (note 2: The first three parts of the soul, giving rise to vegetative life, emotional life, and intellectual life) that does not have a garment (note 3: A moral garment conferred upon it by the sanctification of the parents at the time of conception)..."

Generations have passed since then (note 4: Since the ancestor discovered by the addressee of this letter), and among them, some have undoubtedly achieved Teshuvah*. They regretted what happened and they thereby erased its trace. For all that, you raise this question and you ask me how to repair what occurred. Now, various texts establish that such a repair must be directed at the domain where the deficiency was found. In this case, you must make efforts, a great effort proportional to the damage caused, in order to spread the wellsprings (note 5: Of Chassidus*) outward. In any event, everyone is obligated to carry out such action and it is therefore only a matter here of advising you and showing you the importance of it. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of this to me. With my blessing,

במענה למכתבו מכ"ד טבת, הילולא של אדמו"ר הזקן, והקודמו.

בו כותב אשר נודע לו שהוא מצאצאי וכו' ומקשר זה עם הכתוב בתניא סוף פרק ב', שאין לך נר"ן שאין לו לבוש וכו'.

והנה כיון שכמה דורות עברו מאז, וביניהם בודאי כאלו שנתחרטו ועשו תשובה, על הענין, בטח שבטל הרושם, בכ"ז כיון שמעורר ע"ז ושואל לתיקון, הרי מבואר בכ"מ שהתקון צ"ל באותו הענין בו הי' החסרון, ז.א. שהתקון הוא ע"י ההשתדלות [ועד כדי ליגיעה גדולה, ע"ד כמו שהי' בהקלקול], בהפצת המעינות חוצה, ואף שבלא"ה כל אחד מחויב בזה, לא נצרכה אלא לזירוז והעדפה יתירה, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור.
