Volume 18 · Letter 160 · To: Rabbi.

By the grace of Hashem*,

25 Teves* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 19 Teves*, in which you indicate to me that some are wondering whether they should write (note 1: To the Rebbe*) to report their shortcomings. You specify that there have been bitter discussions on this subject. I am very surprised that there can be any doubt in this matter, for I have already written several times on this subject, specifying that in any event, some do effectively transmit such news. Nevertheless, when they do so, this news then comes from outsiders and it is therefore exaggerated, which has the opposite consequence to that sought by those who wish to keep it silent (note 2: Who wish to suppress it, whereas on the contrary, it becomes exaggerated).

But the essential reason for my surprise is the following. We have received from our holy masters a clear instruction according to which one must analyze such ideas, establish what their origin is, and know whether there is a doubt on this subject, as the HaYom Yom* says, on the date of 23 Sivan*, the criterion being what will be added to or subtracted from the elements useful for concrete action and the service of Hashem*. Now, there is no doubt that a man who knows he does not have to render an account of his shortcomings in a certain place (note 1: To the Rebbe*) will not reduce these shortcomings and these defects — quite the contrary. This is self-evident. Can one imagine, in this regard, a clearer statement than that of our Sages*, who say: "Would that you feared Hashem* as you fear a man of flesh and blood"?

May Hashem* grant that it become less and less necessary to write such things, not because of this reasoning which has no basis, but rather because the shortcomings and their cause will diminish, until they disappear completely, as Iggeres HaKodesh* explains at the end of chapter 26. One will therefore write detailed letters, not in order to obtain clarifications, but in order to multiply the lights. This is self-evident. You mention what still needs to be repaired. No doubt you will emphasize this again and again (note 3: To those who have the means to effect such repair), all the more so since the common formulation in this regard is: "You shall reprove, a hundred times if necessary," and this is not an exaggerated number, as stated in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, chapter 156, paragraph 7, and its commentaries. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
