Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6662 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 159 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

25 Teves* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Ephraim Eliezer (note 1: Rav E. E. Yalles, of Philadelphia. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6582) HaCohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Teves*, date of the Hilloula* of the Alter Rebbe*. I read therein with pleasure that you are doing better and one can repeat, many times, the words of his master, just as it is said: "All the east was illuminated at Chevron*" (note 2: A phrase that was repeated each morning in the Temple in order to ascertain the dawn, while invoking the merit of the Patriarchs who rest at Chevron*, so as to offer the morning perpetual sacrifice). In this case, "may one go from good to better" (note 3: Such are the "words of the master" referred to above, namely those of the Previous Rebbe*), in all the domains that you mention.

You make reference to the pouring of liquid and to the slope. You doubtless know that these notions are defined in the commentary on the Mishnah* by the Tzemach Tzedek* and in the Shaar HaMiluim*. You also cite the version of this text that says "three steps." In fact, one can indicate several references associating the number three with steps (note 4: The Rebbe* notes in a footnote: "See, in particular, Tractate Sanhedrin* 96a, according to the Torah Or*, at page 31c, Midrash* Bereishis Rabbah* chapter 43, paragraph 3, with the lengthy explanation of Rabbi Chaim Vital* that appears, in particular, at the end of the Chessed LeAvraham*, the Zohar*, volume 3, page 307b. See also the Midrash* Maaseh Torah*"). Regarding the level of Moshe* (note 5: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6273), in relation to the five parts (note 6: That constitute the Jewish soul) which are Nefesh*, Ruach*, Neshamah*, Chayah*, and Yechidah* (note 7: Namely the vegetative part of the soul, its emotional part, its intellectual part, the force that transcends it, and its deep essence), you will consult the writings of the Arizal* mentioned below (note 8: The Rebbe* notes in a footnote: "In the Shaar HaPesukim* of the Sefer HaLikkutim* and in the Likkutei Torah* of the Arizal*"). You will find there a lengthy explanation regarding the expression "He turned aside to see," relative to the verse: "I will turn aside and I will see" (note 9: Shemos* 3:3). And the talk of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* (note 10: See the Sefer HaSichos* 5702, at page 47), whose merit will protect us, which is printed on this subject, is well known. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
