By the grace of Hashem*,
24 Teves* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
After a long interruption, I have received your letter of 17 Teves*. You are considering a collaboration with the young people of the Chabad* association and you tell me that you have refrained from exerting pressure upon them. Your approach is, of course, the right one. When one avoids exerting pressure upon anyone, the action is more enthusiastic and our Sages* observe that "a man prefers one measure of his own to nine measures of his friend." For all that, this concerns only the manner of influencing them. Conversely, the existence of such influence is indispensable, for it is said that "salvation comes through the multitude of counselors." How much more so is this the case in the relations between the young and the elders, and one knows what our Sages* say on this subject. There are different ways, various paths, including pleasant paths, for transmitting this influence and this teaching, so that the one who adopts an idea thinks that he introduced it of his own initiative.
You are considering corresponding with your student. It is clear that this is not sufficient. You will surely find a means of writing to him in a way that calls for a response on his part. Indeed, the simple fact of having to respond to someone stimulates additional effort, so that the situation will provide satisfaction to the one to whom one must render an account. It would also be judicious to find, among your friends here, someone who could address him verbally, of course in a diplomatic manner, without his knowing that the request and the initiative originate from you. Even if the intervention of your friends is not truly decisive, even if it does not bear on fundamental points, this will nonetheless have an impact, by the merit of geographical proximity. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
