Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of Zos Chanukah* (note 1: The last day of this festival) and you will consult the Chassidic* discourse entitled "Blessed is He Who performed miracles," by the Tzemach Tzedek*, which clarifies the importance and value of this day. You tell me that you are the subject of competition among scholars. Indeed, you are jealous of your friends who have more ardor than you in study. For all that, you are motivated in the study of the Torah*, with ardor and constancy.

I am surprised by the formulation of your letter. Indeed, our Sages* say, in Tractate Bava Basra* 22a, that "competition among scholars multiplies wisdom" (note 2: Through emulation). You must therefore cultivate this trait, in order to promote ardor and constancy. In this way, your success in study will be increased. Furthermore, the value of such a situation can be deduced from the verse: "And Rachel was jealous of her sister" (note 3: Who had given birth before her — this is a positive jealousy, leading her to desire even more strongly to have a child herself), as commented upon by the holy Zohar*, volume 2, page 126b, which you will consult. You will also see the Orchos Tzaddikim*, at gate 14, and you will find a lengthy commentary on this subject in the Or HaTorah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, on Parshas* Vayeitzei*, on the verse cited above. And the wisest of all men (note 4: King Shlomo*) says clearly: "Let your heart not be jealous of sins, but only of the fear of Hashem*, all day long."

You specify in your letter that you have studied concepts of Chassidus*. I therefore have good hope that, in accordance with the injunction that one must always ascend in the domain of holiness, you will develop this study, including with enthusiasm and ardor. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news to me of all this. You are surely aware of the three fixed studies that bear on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. At the very least, you will adopt them from now on. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

במענה למכתבו מזאת חנוכה,

ויעיין בד"ה ברוך שעשה נסים להצ"צ, גודל ענין וערך יום סגולה זה,

בו כותב אשר סובל הוא מהענין דקנאת סופרים, אשר מקנא חבריו המתמידים בלימוד יותר ממנו, אף שגם נפשו חשקה בלימוד התורה בהתמדה ושקידה.

ולפלא הדבר סגנון כתבו, שהרי אדרבה אמרו חז"ל קנאת סופרים תרבה חכמה (ב"ב כב, א) שלכן פשוט שעליו להרבות מדה האמורה על מנת להרבות בהתמדה ושקידה, ועי"ז תתרבה ג"כ הצלחתו בהלימודים, וכבר ידוע מעלת מדה האמורה מיוסד על הכתוב ותקנא רחל באחותה ופירושו בזהר הק' חלק ב' קכ"ו ע"ב, עיי"ש וכן בספר ארחות צדיקים שער י"ד, ומבואר בארוכה באור התורה להצמח צדק פרשת ויצא על הכתוב האמור, ומקרא מלא אמר החכם מכל אדם, אל יקנא לבך בחטאים כי אם ביראת ה' כל היום.

כיון שמזכיר במכתבו שלמד ענינים בתורת החסידות תקותי חזקה שמתאים להציווי להעלות בקדש מוסיף בלימוד זה וגם כן בהתמדה ושקידה, ויהי רצון שיבשר טוב בכל האמור.

בטח יודע משלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים ועכ"פ ישמור עליהם מכאן ולהבא.
