Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6656 — Tzedakah
Volume 18 · Letter 153 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu et assume
By the grace of Hashem*,
24 Teves* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and carries out a sacred mission, Rav Ze'ev (note 1: Rav Z. Weber, of Jerusalem. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5386),
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 15 Teves*, in which you recall the words of the Rashbam*, on the verse (note 2: Vayechi 49:16): 'Dan shall judge,' noting that Shimshon* did not perceive its full profound significance (note 3: This prophecy applies to Shimshon*, who avenged his people against the Philistines and judged all of Israel, united before him). You recall, however, that many Midrashim* of our Sages* (note 4: Midrash Tanchuma*, chapter 12, and Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*, chapter 99, paragraph 11) do indeed adopt such an interpretation.
Here is what the Rashbam* means: the explanations of the Sages* belong to the analytical part of the Torah*, the Derush*, but not to its simple meaning, the Peshat*. The Rashbam* clarifies more precisely the connection of all of this in his commentary on the Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas* Vayeishev, which you will consult. With my blessing to convey good news,
For the Rebbe Shlita*,
the secretary,
