Volume 18 · Letter 151

By the grace of Hashem*,

21 Teves* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Sunday. I read therein with pleasure that you took part in the Chassidic* gathering on the luminous day of 19 Kislev*, Rosh Hashanah* of the teaching of Chassidus* and the Chassidic* ways. May Hashem* grant that there be fulfilled in you what is the purpose of every gathering — that is, that it take effect and that its imprint be preserved during the days, weeks, and months that follow, through to concrete action, as it is said: 'To fear Hashem* and to observe His Mitzvos* is the entire purpose of man.'

You ask me how to strengthen prayer. The Halachah*, ruled by the Shulchan Aruch*, Orach Chaim*, chapter 98, paragraph 2, and by the Ramah*, specifies that before praying — that is, three times a day — it is necessary to meditate upon the greatness of Hashem* and the smallness of man, even though, of course, the nature of this reflection is not the same before the morning prayer, which introduces the day and is long, as before that of Minchah* and Maariv*. For the same reason, the Pesukei DeZimrah* (note 1: The passages preceding the blessings of the Shema*, which should invite reflection) are lengthy in the morning. Furthermore, one should pray with a Siddur*. And if the Yeshivah* program does not permit daily meditation on the meaning of all the words, it would be judicious and good to reflect, each day, on at least one passage, one verse which, of course, will be different each time. In this way, after a certain time, you will have meditated on all the passages, on all the parts of the prayer (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6628). Our Sages* also commanded us to set aside Tzedakah* before prayer, as it is said: 'In righteousness I shall behold Your countenance,' which means that through righteousness, Tzedek*, 'I shall behold Your countenance.'

As various books explain, the observance of the ritual immersion of Ezra (note 3: After every conjugal relation and, by extension, every day) is very important and has a direct influence on prayer and its level. Even though, according to the strict measure of the Law, this immersion has been abrogated (note 4: It is no longer an obligation), Rav Hai Gaon*, the last of the Geonim* but the first in quality, specifies that this is so for the Torah* — that is, for its study — but not for prayer, as Rabbeinu Yonah* on the Rif* also explains, in the third chapter of tractate Berachos*, who concludes: 'Even if the Halachah* does not establish an obligation here, all agree that prayer is more readily received after a ritual immersion.' The books of Kabbalah*, Chassidus*, and even Mussar* explain all of this at length.

You are surely aware of the fixed studies that bear on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. You have adopted them or, at the very least, will do so in the future. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news to me of all this. With my blessing,
