Greetings and blessings,
You tell me, at the end of your letter, that your moral state is very low and you are surprised by this. Now, these two statements are, both of them, astonishing. Indeed, why be affected by it? The Alter Rebbe* explains that sadness is a stratagem of the evil inclination. And he explains at length that the side of evil makes use of this tactic against anyone who has not attained the level of King David, whose 'heart was destroyed within himself,' for 'he no longer had an evil inclination.'
My second cause for astonishment stems from the observation that you are conceding victory to the evil inclination in this stratagem, which Hashem* forbid. Not only does it draw you toward this moral state, but, moreover, you concretely find yourself there. Now, if everyone receives the strength not to let himself be convinced, to cause such a stratagem to fail from the outset, how much more so should this be the case for those whom divine Providence has granted the merit of devoting themselves to the holy institutions belonging to the community of Chassidim*. The central point in this matter is to serve Hashem* with joy and enthusiasm. I await good news of all this and may Hashem* grant that it be so as quickly as possible. ... ולסיום מכתבו שנמצא במצב רוח ירוד ומתפלא על זה. שני הענינים תמוהים, מה שמתפלא ע"ז, והרי כותב רבנו הזקן שזהו מתחבולותיו של היצה"ר [ענין העצבות], וכותב שם בארוכה, שמזה מובן שכל מי שלא הגיע למדריגת דוד המלך [דלבו חלל שאין לו יצה"ר] הלא מנסה הלעו"ז גם בתכסיס זה, ותמי' השני, מה שמניח (ער לאזט) להיצה"ר שיצליח ח"ו בתכסיס זה, שלא רק שמפתהו להיות במצב רוח ירוד אלא שנמצא בפועל בו, ואם לכ"א נתנו הכחות שלא להתפתות ולבטל תכסיס זה מעיקרא עאכו"כ באלו שזיכתה אותם השגחה עליונה לעסוק במוסדות הק' השייכים לעדת החסידים שנקודה הראשית בזה עבודת ה' בשמחה ובטוב לבב דוקא, ואצפה לבשו"ט בכל האמור ויהי רצון שיהי' זה בקרוב ממש.
