Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6647 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 144
By the grace of Hashem*,
15 Teves* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of 16/12, in which you describe the accident that has unfortunately occurred (note 1: On the road, the addressee's car had overturned). May Hashem* grant that in the future you announce to me only good, a visible and tangible good, in communal domains as in what concerns you personally. In fact, for a Jew, these two dimensions are linked, and you know the saying (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 5808) of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, according to which 'an individual is considered as an entire community and he can act upon an entire community.' How much more so is this the case for what concerns you, since, from what I know, you have already tried to exert such an influence and you have succeeded.
You ask me specifically about this event, which occurred on the road. Now, as you know, it is explained in various texts that everything that takes place in our material world emanates from the spiritual dimension and, more particularly, from the Torah*. This is what our Sages* teach, at the beginning of Midrash Bereishis Rabbah*: 'The Torah* is the notebook and the plan from which the entire world was built, with all that it contains.' Every material event therefore alludes, or sometimes even more than an allusion, to the moral situation. Spiritually, the path is described by the verse: 'They shall guard the way of Hashem* by doing Tzedakah* and justice,' which corresponds to the Torah* and the Mitzvos* in general, to Tzedakah* and justice in particular. Chassidus* explains the link that exists between these two concepts. Indeed, Tzedakah* must follow a judgment intended to determine what is necessary and indispensable for one's own needs. It is then that one can set aside the largest share for Tzedakah*.
The same is true for spiritual Tzedakah*. You must make a just evaluation of your situation, of your capacity to influence your fellow, in your near or distant surroundings. Subsequently, you will set aside the largest share of it, as well as that of your energy and capacities, and you will devote all of this to Tzedakah*, by exerting your influence upon those who are far away, in order to draw them closer to the World to Come, which will be useful to them in this world as well. To someone such as you, it is surely unnecessary to say more. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news to me of this. You will also tell me that you earn your livelihood in a peaceful manner and in abundance. May Hashem* grant you success. With my blessing,
