Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the fast of the tenth month (note 1: The 10th of Teves*), which will soon be transformed into joy and gladness. You specify that you teach the students of the Yeshivah* Tomchei Temimim* in your city. And you tell me that, as a result, you have studied practically nothing on your own account. You will understand that I am profoundly surprised by such a statement. How can teaching a class have the effect of eliminating personal study? Moreover, you indicate that these are young students. It is, certainly, indispensable to prepare each lesson, as our Sages* teach and as our masters concretely did, including when it came to the reading of the Haftarah* (note 2: Which they also prepared), but the time necessary for this preparation should, accordingly (note 3: Given the level of the students), be quantitatively small. And may Hashem* grant that you study on your own account during all the time you do not devote to this teaching.

As for the question of whether you should continue your studies, everything depends on the results (note 4: Of the teaching to the students). If the teaching to your students is fruitful, it is clear that it must be continued. In all of this, Hashem* will guide you toward what will be good for you in every respect. With my blessing,

במענה למכתבו מצום העשירי, יהפך לששון ולשמחה בקרוב, בו כותב ע"ד לימודו עם כתת תלמידים דישיבת תומכי תמימים ב... ואשר בשביל זה כמעט לא למד כלום בשביל עצמו.

ומובנת התמי' הכי גדולה, הכי לימוד עם כתת תלמידים שוללת אפשרית לימוד בפ"ע, ובפרט שכותב שהם צעירים, שהכנה ללימוד, אף כי מוכרחת היא לכל לימוד וכידוע מרז"ל [וכנודע מרבותינו נשיאינו ואפילו לאמירת מפטיר וכיו"ב], אבל הזמן הדרוש על הכנה מתאימה בהנ"ל, מצער היא בכמות, והלואי שילמוד כל הזמן הפנוי מלימוד עם התלמידים, בשביל עצמו.

בגוף השאלה, אם ימשיך ללמוד, הרי זה תלוי בהתוצאות: אם הצליח בתלמידיו מובן שיש להמשיך בזה, והשי"ת ינחהו בכל האמור בטוב לפניו בכל הפרטים.
