Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6644 — Chinuch
By the grace of Hashem*,
13 Teves* 5719,
Brooklyn, New York,
To the students of the Shaarei Chesed* evening Yeshivah*, under the auspices of the young people of the Chabad* association, in the holy city of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt, may Hashem* grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I received, in its time, your letter on the occasion of the second anniversary of your Yeshivah*. Subsequently, I obtained, with pleasure, news of the gathering held for all the students of the evening Yeshivah* and of the examinations that took place at Chanukah*. I address my blessing to each one in particular. Indeed, various texts explain that at Chanukah*, the aim was 'to make them forget Your Torah* and make them transgress the Decrees of Your Will.' Thus, the wicked kingdom of Greece did not wish to forbid the Torah* as a discipline of the mind. Its objective was rather to make them forget that it is precisely 'Your Torah*,' the complete Torah* of Hashem*. The same was true for the practice of the Mitzvos*. The Greeks did not attack those that are logical, but rather the Decrees, all the Precepts that are not reasoned. Moreover, they were even prepared to accept them provided they not be 'the Decrees of Your Will,' the expression of the Will of the Creator.
When the children of Israel — men, women, and children — gave of their own selves, the wicked fell into the hands of the righteous and the evil ones into the hands of those who devote themselves to Your Torah*. The Jews then received an additional festival 'to praise and glorify His great Name' (note 1: According to the text of the prayer recited during the lighting of the candles). In an ever-increasing manner, they can thus illuminate the darkness of the exile through the lights of Chanukah*, and the Halachah* follows the opinion of Beis Hillel* (note 2: According to which these candles are lit in increasing order). It is said that 'the candle of Hashem* is the soul of man.' Every Jew is therefore the candle of the Holy One, blessed be He. His role is defined by the Mishnah*, which affirms: 'I was created to serve my Creator' — that is, to illuminate the portion of the world that one receives as one's share, not only one's animal soul but also one's surroundings, everything that is outside, just as the Chanukah* candles burn 'at the door of one's house toward the outside.' May Hashem* grant that all of this be accomplished in each of you, in an ever-increasing and ever more luminous manner. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
Of course, what has just been said is also addressed to your friends, whom Hashem* will grant long life, to those who belong to the other groups of the evening Yeshivah* (note 3: In other cities, outside of Jerusalem). No doubt you will transmit this message to them. But, above all, you will provide them with a judicious example of the attitude of a good student who knows success, in accordance with the hope and the objective of our masters and leaders, whose merit will protect us.
