Volume 18 · Letter 137

By the grace of Hashem*,

12 Teves* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of this Friday, in which you briefly describe what you have experienced. You conclude by affirming that you wish to return to Judaism. Happy is your lot, for you have made the decision to do the true good, material and spiritual, to adopt a way of life based on the teaching of our holy Torah*, the Torah* of life. As our Sages* give the assurance, when a person 'sanctifies himself somewhat here below, he receives an important sanctification from above.' How much more so when one multiplies such actions!

You tell me that some people mock you. It would be good not to polemicize with them at all. Sometimes, such people scoff because, in the depths of their soul, they feel well enough that their own conduct is not satisfactory. Indeed, their ancestors and the ancestors of their ancestors, for three thousand five hundred years, followed the path of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, whereas these men themselves have turned away from it. Likewise, they have the feeling, even if sometimes they do not understand it intellectually, that they have gone astray because they were not able to struggle against their evil inclination. They therefore seek to obscure their feeling through sneering and mockery. Now, in practice, one can observe that by refraining from engaging in dialogue with them, by following the path of the Torah* and the Mitzvos* without concerning oneself with those who mock, one causes them to cease doing so, and they themselves approach, step by step, the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, of which it is said: 'You shall live by them.'

I hope that you often meet the young people of the Chabad* association, as you mention in your letter, that you participate in their Chassidic* gatherings, regarding which it is said: 'Each one will come to the aid of his fellow.' Regarding your financial situation, you tell me that you have debts. Each weekday, before the morning prayer, you will therefore set aside a few coins for Tzedakah*. It would be good to do the same before the Minchah* prayer. You will also observe the custom of reciting, after the morning prayer, Tehillim* according to the monthly division. Likewise, it would be good to have your Tefillin* checked, in order to ensure that they are kosher*, in accordance with Halachah*. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

For the Rebbe Shlita*,

the secretary,
