To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Michael Aryeh Yehudah Leib HaKohen,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 28 Cheshvan* and to those that preceded it. You have surely received my letter in response to your wife, whom Hashem* will grant long life. You mention the plowing during the seventh year, that of the Shemittah*. It is, of course, appalling that a Jew could engage in such an activity. For even those who permit such work do not permit it to be performed by a Jew. And unfortunately, in our period of intense and profound darkness, if one takes as proof the fact that such-and-such a person permits himself such an activity, one can, which Hashem* forbid, transgress the entirety of the Torah*.

I thank you very much for your blessing appearing at the end of your letter. Without a doubt, the promise of the Creator of the world shall be fulfilled: "I will bless those who bless you." The great importance of all this is described by the Chassidic* discourse entitled: "Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi teaches: Every Kohen* who bestows a blessing (note 1: The recipient of this letter is a Kohen*) is himself blessed." Its text is published in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5629 (1869), which has just appeared, and which you will consult. With my blessing to convey good news,

P.S.: You are surely preparing a detailed program to make the most of the days of Kislev* in general, of the luminous day of 19 Kislev* (note 2: Date of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe* from the Tsarist prisons) in particular, in order to spread the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) until they reach the outside.

מובן שמבהיל הדבר שאיש הישראלי יתעסק בזה, שהרי אפילו המתירין - לא התירו מלאכה כהנ"ל ע"י ישראל. והראי' שפלוני עוסק בזה, לדאבוננו בתקופתנו דחשך כפול ומכופל, מצד ראי' זו יש לעבור ר"ל על כל התורה כולה.

ת"ח ת"ח על ברכתו בסיום וחותם מכתבו, ובודאי תקוים הבטחת בורא עולם ואברכה מברכיך, וכמבואר גודל המעלה בזה בד"ה אמר רבי יב"ל כל כהן שמברך מתברך (ספר המאמרים תרכ"ט, שהו"ל ז"ע. יעוין שם).
