By the grace of Hashem*,

1 Kislev* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

After, once again, a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter of 19 Cheshvan*, in which you describe to me the state of mind of your wife, following your settling in that place. You attribute this situation to your solitude in that location. I am very surprised at Chassidim* who do not pay attention to what appears in the most evident manner, and moreover who seek explanations and interpretations along tortuous paths. What I mean is quite simple. When there was discussion of your settling in this city — you surely remember — the purpose was for you, and it seems to me that this was even written once or twice, to spread in that place, after your arrival, Judaism in general and Chassidus* in particular. Now take stock of all the years you have spent there. On one hand, you will observe the kindnesses of Hashem*, in the blessings He has granted you. On the other hand, you will note the great neglect that prevails regarding your work and that of your wife, in her domain — the spreading of Judaism and of Chassidus*. It is therefore natural, and not surprising, that your settling is not going well. The causes you invoke are, in fact, only consequences — incitements of the evil inclination designed to conceal the truth.

Of course, I can imagine the justifications you might advance for the deficiency and the lack in what has been accomplished. Such-and-such a person does not behave as he should. You are busy earning a living. But it is quite clear that all of this explains nothing. Indeed:

A) Is it because such-and-such a person does not behave as he should that you should reduce your activity — especially since, as I was saying, your success in your livelihood depends on it?

B) The same applies to the second point — the effort to earn a living. Such activity elicits the blessing of Hashem*, in order to be able to ensure one's own sustenance and to know success in your settling in general.

You will therefore understand my surprise upon noting that you are making the greatest efforts to forge the natural receptacle here below, intended to receive the blessing, and that you thus justify your inactivity regarding the blessing itself, which issues from its heavenly source. Yet this must be introduced into the receptacle. And it is clear that devoting oneself to what is accessory plays only a secondary role relative to the principal activity. This is self-evident. Of course, my purpose is not to cause suffering to anyone nor merely to moralize. I am alluding to the future, especially the nearest future. Moreover, it is now easier than before to act for Chassidus* where you are, on the one hand. And on the other hand, one can now see with one's eyes of flesh that nothing more is being done, that no action is being taken to develop Chabad*, for all the activities that were introduced have been interrupted after a certain time, then there was another activity, which itself was interrupted.

May Hashem* grant that you announce to me very soon good news of all this. You will tell me that you have broadened your activities in your city, in all the domains of Chassidus*, putting into practice the words of the verse: "And you shall spread forth." With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
