Greetings and blessings,

I was pleased to receive your letter of 24 Cheshvan*, in which you relay the words of your doctor, noting the improvement in your state of health. May Hashem* grant that this improvement continue, that it proceed, in the expression of our masters, "from good to better." You tell me that you comply with the doctor's prescriptions, but that you do not do so scrupulously. Of course, I am not satisfied with this, for "the Torah* gave the doctor permission to heal," and consequently there is a Mitzvah* to do so for the doctor, as stated by the Turei Zahav*, Yoreh De'ah*, at the beginning of chapter 237, but also a great and considerable Mitzvah* on the part of the patient — that of: "You shall diligently guard your souls" and: "having a healthy and whole body is among the ways of Hashem*" (note 1: According to the words of the Rambam*, in his Mishneh Torah*). Thus the Maggid* (note 2: Of Mezeritch) warned his son, the angel (note 3: Rabbi Avraham "the angel"), in these terms: "A small orifice in the body is a gaping hole in the soul," and there are many other teachings that go in the same direction. There is no need to elaborate on all this, so evident is it.

I have great hope that, upon receiving this letter, you will convey good news. You will tell me that at least in the future, you will no longer interfere with the doctor's prescriptions. On the contrary, you will put them into practice in the proper manner, especially since one can concretely observe that the neglect of the Torah* for a certain period (note 4: Due to his state of health, in order to obtain healing), if indeed one can speak of neglect in such a case, brings, in the end, an immense reward, for it is indeed in this way that one feels better, until one is completely healed. Then the lack is amply made up, which is not the case if one notes a weakness in this matter — this is quite evident.

We are entering Kislev*, the month of miracles, of deliverance (note 5: Of the Alter Rebbe*, on 19 Kislev*, and of the Mitteler Rebbe*, on 10 Kislev*), of ever-increasing light (note 6: On Chanukah*). May Hashem* therefore multiply His blessings in this matter as well as in all the other domains that you mention in your letter, particularly concerning the institutions that you cite. It is fitting to thank him and to encourage him in the actions he carries out for Judaism and everything that concerns it in general, for what happens in your country (note 8: Presumably the Holy Land) in particular.

נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מכ"ד חשון, בו מעתיק דברי הרופא ע"ד הטבת בריאותו, ויהי רצון שילך מצב בריאותו הלוך וטוב, וכפתגם רבותינו נשיאינו, פון גוט צו נאך בעסער.

ומובן שאין דעתי נוחה ממ"ש שעושה כהוראת הרופא אבל לא בדיוק, שהרי התורה נתנה רשות לרופא לרפאות, ובנתינת רשות זה, ה"ז נעשה מצוה מצד הרופא (עיין ט"ז יו"ד ריש סימן רל"ז) ולמצוה גדולה ורבה מצד הנרפא, הענין דונשמרתם מאד לנפשותיכם, והיות הגוף בריא ושלם מדרכי השם הוא, ואזהרת הרב המגיד לבנו המלאך, א קליינע לעכעלע אין גוף - ;63636#&א גרויסע לעכעל אין נשמה, ועוד ועוד. ואין להאריך בדבר הפשוט.

ותקותי חזקה, שתיכף בקבלת מכתבי זה, יבשרני טוב - שעכ"פ מכאן ולהבא, לא יתערב בהוראות הרופא, כי אם יקיימם כדבעי, ובפרט שהרי רואים במוחש, שביטולה של ענין של תורה למשך זמן, אפילו באם נקרא זה ביטול, מביא שכר מרובה לאחרי זמן, כיון שעי"ז מתקדמת הטבת הבריאות עד לרפואה שלימה, וממלא החסרון פי כמה, משא"כ ע"י הרפיון בזה, וק"ל.

ויהי רצון שכיון שנכנסים הננו בחדש כסלו הוא חדש הנסים והגאולה, והאור, באופן דמוסיף והולך, הנה יתוסף בברכות השי"ת בהנ"ל, ובשאר הענינים אודותם כותב במכתבו ובהמוסדות... לכל לראש.
