Volume 18 · Letter 69

By the grace of Hashem*,

29 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Menachem Zeev (note 1: Rav M. Z. Gringlass, of Montreal. See, on his subject, Letter no. 5887) HaLevi,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 25 Cheshvan*, as well as those that preceded it, with what was enclosed. I thank you very much for the efforts you have made to gather additional notes on the customs of the Chassidim*. No doubt you will continue to do so with Rav Y. Ch. (note 2: Presumably Rav Yehudah Chitrik) and with other Chassidim*, on the condition that they are reliable in what they report. If there is a doubt regarding a certain person, this must be mentioned and its content specified. I have also received your explanation on the Tanya* and I thank you very much for it.

You ask me about our custom of not saying the verses of Zechor Bris* (note 3: The prayers of the "little Yom Kippur*") on the eve of Rosh Chodesh*. Your question also concerns the verse: "And David said to Gad" (note 4: In the supplications of these same prayers). I posed this same question to my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, when he was drawing up the list of the Selichos*. He answered me that, despite the objection that was thus raised (note 5: Why not recite these passages?), such was indeed our custom. The same applies to the blessing of the Kohanim* recited during the Neilah* (note 6: The last prayer of Yom Kippur*, during which this blessing is not recited by the Kohanim*). Indeed, I received a clear instruction from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, on this subject, when I was to edit the collection of Chabad* customs that was published at that time. He reported to me the actual practice in Lubavitch in this matter. No doubt the year to which you allude (note 7: In which the blessing of the Kohanim was indeed recited during the Neilah) was therefore exceptional.

At a propitious moment, I will mention all those you cite at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, so that each may obtain the fulfillment of his needs, in accordance with what you write. Furthermore, your son is beginning the study of the Written Law, and may Hashem* grant that he proceed, at age ten, to the study of the Mishnah*, then, at age thirteen, to the practice of the Mitzvos*. You and your wife will educate him, together with all your other children, to Torah*, to the wedding canopy, and to good deeds, with joy and enthusiasm. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
