Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of the twentieth day of Cheshvan*. I have already explained to several young men who find themselves in the same situation as you, the necessity for every Jew to submit to the yoke of the Heavenly Sovereignty and to that of the Mitzvos*, according to the formulation of the Mishnah*, in the second chapter of tractate Berachos*. How much more so is this the case for those who find themselves in the army, within which one receives a specific injunction: "Your camp shall be holy." Moreover, such an attitude influences the serenity of the army, as the verses state: "Hashem* your Elokim* goes and comes within your camp, in order to save you... your camp shall be holy, and nothing unseemly shall be seen there... for He would turn away from you," which Hashem* forbid. Based on what you wrote me, you previously studied in the Yeshivos*. No doubt you will therefore find the luminous words that will enable you to explain all of this to your comrades.

May Hashem* grant that your words emanate from your heart and that they penetrate into the hearts of those who hear them, so that concrete action results — the effective practice of the Mitzvos* in daily life. This is also the answer to the question you ask me: what to do when one is discouraged and desires to purify one's soul? Indeed, assuming the highest mission, of the greatest importance, is the most perfect moral satisfaction, the spiritual happiness that purifies the soul and elevates it to a higher level. במענה למכתבו מעשרים בחשון.

... וכבר מלתי אמורה לכמה מאברכים הנמצאים במצב כמו הוא אשר אם כל אחד ואחד מישראל צריך, כסגנון המשנה, לקבל עליו עול מלכות שמים ועול מצות (ברכות פ"ב) על אחת כמה וכמה אלו הנמצאים בצבא, אשר בציווי מיוחד נצטוו, והי' מחנך קדוש, ולא עוד אלא שהנהגתו בזה משפיע על בטחון כל הצבא, וכסדר הפסוקים, ה' אלקיך מתהלך בקרב מחנך להצילך וגו' והי' מחנך קדוש ולא יראה בך וגו' ושב מאחריך ח"ו, וכיון שע"פ כתבו למד בעבר בישיבות, בודאי ימצא אותיות מאירות איך להסביר לחבריו את כל האמור.

ויהי רצון שיהיו דבריו יוצאין מן הלב ונכנסים ללב השומעים ובאופן שיביא לידי מעשה בפועל, קיום מצות מעשיות בחיי היום יומים.

ובזה נכלל גם המענה לשאלתו מהי העצה לדכאון נפשו ולטהרת הנשמה - כי מילוי תפקיד הכי חשוב ונעלה האמור, הרי זה ספוק נפשי הכי שלם אושר נפשי ומטהר הנשמה ומעלה אותה לדרגא עליונה יותר.
