Igrot Kodesh · Letter 657 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 3 · Letter 263

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Menachem Av 5710,

To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav M. Z.,[1]

I greet you and bless you.

I received in their time your two letters, the six pages of practical halachos,[2] the letter of Rav R. I. H. Halevi, and the Mekor Chaim, which I must return to you. I thank you for all this.

Concerning Merkaz LeInyanei Chinuch and Machne Israel,[3] if your action in this domain may diminish that which concerns the Maamad,[4] it is clear that it is better to be cautious.

Regarding the collection of practical halachos, it is, in my opinion, difficult to adopt a clear-cut position to determine what should be included. In fact, the content must presumably vary according to where one is. For all that, even if this booklet does not meet these criteria, it can have a usefulness, in that it prevents the commission of the prohibitions it sets out and engages people to put into practice what they should do.

I asked Rav H. M. A. Hodakov to read it and formulate remarks, which you will find enclosed.

In my opinion, the references must be placed at the bottom of the page, so as not to disturb the simple reader. As a proposal, after summary reflection, this booklet could be entitled "Collection of Halachos, Volume 1" or else "Useful Indications for Daily Life, First Collection."

Some time ago, one of my acquaintances pointed out to me that Chassidim do not always preserve themselves from lashon hara*. Perhaps it would be good to evoke this subject, even briefly, in this collection.

You tell me that, not having been satisfied, you will not take part in... How can you put these two elements in parallel? There is, on the one hand, a passing and individual dissatisfaction; on the other, as you yourself recognize, what may cause harm to a student for several years, perhaps even for his entire life, as well as to other people. I am particularly surprised by your attitude.

Concerning the kindergarten, I have spoken at length here with guests who came from Montreal. They have no doubt transmitted to you the content of our discussion, the synthesis of which is the following. The Chassidim of Lubavitch are distinguished from those of Hungary by the fact that the latter wish to separate themselves from other Jews, which has never been the conception of Lubavitch.

Obviously, this does not mean that one must be with the others in all that they do. In fact, it is rather a question of drawing the others along, even if this has the consequence of advancing at their pace. When the upper waters were separated from the lower waters, there was indeed talk of dispute.[5] As a result, it was impossible to write that it was good.[6] Now, our Sages, in Bereishis Rabba 4:6, clearly establish that it was a "separation realized for the perfection of the world and so that it would be habitable." The Torah itself bears witness that it was indeed so. Despite this, it does not say the word "good."

Our Sages say, in tractate Eruvin 32b, that the sage knows how to commit a small fault to preserve himself from a great one. You will also consult the Tosafos at the same reference and the Sdei Chemed, principles, 6:26. Indeed, a Chassid is one who knows how to put himself in danger for the good of his fellow. This subject could be largely developed.

I therefore asked them that the cheder function after the opening hours of the kindergarten,[7] and one will do the same in all other domains, so that the children of Canada do not suffer the constraint.

I have heard nothing particular about the Nishmas Chaim. Its author possesses a particular merit since he has strengthened belief in reincarnation. Nonetheless, in his book, he mixes wheat and chaff, as one who consults it can verify.

I possess the Likkutei Maharyach, from which I have learned a few references and the origin of certain practices.

Long ago, a brochure presenting the laws of family purity in Yiddish was published, it seems to me in Warsaw, by the rabbinical union. You can no doubt obtain a copy and reissue it, introducing some modifications, according to the conditions of the place and the practices of the Hungarian Chassidim.

Wishing you all the best and good health to all the members of your family — of whom you will please give me news from time to time,

Rav Menachem Schneerson
