Volume 18 · Letter 61 · To: chapitre 10.

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Rav I. Dubov, of Manchester. See, on his subject, Letters no. 6279, 6928, and 6993),

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*. You ask me about the assertion of our Sages* according to which "one who is greater than his fellow also has a more powerful evil inclination than him." You also mention the well-known story (note 2: See, on this subject, Letter no. 4723), published in HaTamim*, concerning what Avraham did through his body (note 3: He seemed to doubt the Word of Hashem*, Who announced to him the birth of Yitzchak. Was this a manifestation of an evil inclination?), and you further evoke the assertion of the Tanya* (note 4: In chapter 10), according to which evil can, in the strict sense, be transformed into good (note 5: Is this the mission assigned to one who has a greater inclination toward evil?). Of course, your question does not pertain to the Tanya*, but to the Yerushalmi*, at the end of tractate Berachos*, and to the Zohar*, volume 3, page 107b. Moreover, the Yerushalmi* cites by name our father Avraham. I do not mention the Bavli*, in tractate Berachos* 61b, because Rashi* gives a different interpretation of it, which is not the case for the previously cited references.

But, in reality, there is no question here. Indeed, this assertion, concerning "one who is greater than his fellow," describes a natural state — that of a person before he brings his own effort to bear. Subsequently, it (note 6: The evil inclination) is transformed into good or eliminated through fasting. This can be compared, but of course in a much more refined form, to the fall of one who has attained Teshuvah*, which is particularly bitter, since it causes his previous nature to resurface. This is how one must understand what is said about our father Avraham. Another example can, moreover, be cited — that of food entering the refined body of Moshe, its elevation toward the heavenly spheres, the bread of heaven (note 7: The manna) which produced no waste, but which he did not consume, however, for this could not have been compared to the act of not eating.

You tell me that you have invited your brother-in-law, the Rav Shlita*, to study Chassidus*. No doubt you will not content yourself with telling him once. You will do so until your words are followed by effect, in a fixed manner. As the Alter Rebbe* specifies, this fixity will be not only in time, but also in the soul, which is essential. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

M. Schneerson,
