Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6563 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 60

By the grace of Hashem*,

22 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn, New York,

To Mr. Eliezer Steinman (note 1: See, on his subject, Letters no. 6472 and 6816),

Greetings and blessings,

A) I have duly received your letter of 5 Cheshvan*, in which you ask me about marking one's victory loudly and with ostentation (note 2: By proclaiming: "It is indeed I who was right"). You are right to say that one who possesses finesse of spirit cannot bear such a situation. And fortunate is the one who preserves himself from all this. Nevertheless, you know the conception of our Torah*, in general, and of Chassidus*, in particular, which resolutely rejects the attitude that consists of saying: "I have saved my own person" (note 3: Without concerning oneself with what happens to others). Whenever a situation must be rectified, there is no choice — one must take a stand. Of course, one can do so without marking one's victory. This, moreover, is what I meant in the previous letter I addressed to you. It is clear that I am not referring here to the methods of action employed by those who shout and make noise, all the more so since in this matter, it is not certain that such a manner of proceeding will succeed. I am referring more precisely to the capacities that Divine Providence* has granted you and which have enabled you to find a path to the hearts of people belonging to various circles and to find an echo among them.

I will clarify my point. I am not referring either to certain situations such as mixed swimming pools, women's military service, the sale and raising of pigs (note 4: Literally, "other things") in the holy city of Jerusalem. In my opinion, all these circumstances are the consequence of a global policy of struggle against religion. Certain persons waging this battle may perhaps have the desire to struggle against those who represent religion or against a religious party — that is, against men, not against the faith. But in the end, for those who receive all this, who are influenced by it, it does not make a real difference.

If my information is correct, there has been, in recent years, in the Holy Land, a somewhat gratifying evolution in this matter. Indeed, some time ago, the reactions against religion were observed "below," among the youth, whom the leaders followed — some willingly, others having no alternative. Now, in these most recent years, the young are seeking the path of return to faith and religion. Those who, for the moment, still oppose the concrete application of the Mitzvos* or the faith of Israel do so, very often, out of lack of knowledge, more than out of deliberate opposition. But, to our great misfortune, those at their head who lead them have retained the old methods. They still struggle against religion and against everything connected to it. From time to time, this manifests through the situations previously mentioned or through others still. It is not my own role to enumerate the faults of the... (note 5: Jews). This goes against my will, particularly when they find themselves in our Holy Land. But the facts are well known and known to all. Who knows what will result from this? One must therefore act quickly and do so while there is still time. Not only will the manifestations observed until now be weakened, but moreover, new ones will be prevented.

B) At the end of your letter, you tell me that you have the desire to study the Torah*, but what can you do? It is impossible for you to carry out two tasks at once. This problem, like all those concerning a person, finds a clear solution in our Torah*, Torah* of life. Indeed, tractate Moed Katan* 9a-b says that the Mitzvah* whose fulfillment one cannot entrust to someone else takes precedence over the study of the Torah*.
