To the attention of the judge, Mr. Shalom Kessan,

Greetings and blessings,

After a particularly long interruption, I received, with pleasure, your letter of 5 Cheshvan* and I was especially satisfied to read in it your impressions of the gratifying situation constituted by the participation of the young people in the Chabad* synagogues where you prayed during the Days of Awe* (note 1: Rosh Hashanah* and Yom Kippur*) and on Simchas Torah*. Of course, I agree with you that the most fundamental question, in every settlement and in every country, most particularly in our Holy Land, is indeed the direction taken by the youth. You know that the leaders of Chabad*, in every generation and in every place, assumed various occupations and confronted many difficulties for the good of the community as well as for that of the individual. Despite this, they always devoted a large share of their action to the education and the drawing close of the young. This question was always prioritized over many others.

To someone like you, who is attentive to the values of our people and who, through your functions as a judge, possesses a particular capacity enabling you to probe the interiority and the state of mind of a person, it is surely unnecessary to explain at length that, in the situation currently experienced by our Holy Land, this question takes on greatly increased importance, because another dimension is added to it. Indeed, immigrants have been uprooted from the places where they had previously resided for centuries, where they had had a regulated way of life for many generations. For most of them, they discovered a new world when they settled in the Holy Land. And this is not the case only for the immigrants of recent years. The same principle applies as well, to a large extent, to those who constitute the second generation after settlement in Eretz Yisrael*.

Fortunately, this problem has a solution. Indeed, every Jewish man and woman, in the depths of the soul, being a descendant of Avraham, Yitzchak, and Yaakov, bears, deeply implanted within, the love of Hashem*, the love of His Torah*, good conduct — as the books of Chassidus* explain at length and, in particular, its foundational work, the Tanya*. Consequently, we have the certainty that, by providing the proper effort, it is possible to orient the youth, with success, on the path of good and righteousness. The awareness of this must encourage all those who lend their support to this sacred mission. With my respects and my blessing,

שלום וברכה!

לאחר ההפסק הכי ארוך, נעם לי לקבל מכתבו מיום ה' בחשון, וביחוד לקרוא בו ע"ד התרשמותו מהתופעה המשמחת, היא השתתפות בני הנוער בבתי כנסת חב"ד בימים הנוראים ובשמחת תורה שהתפלל שם.

מובן שאני מסכים עם כ' שהבעי' הכי חשובה בכל קיבוץ וארץ ובפרט בארצנו הק' הוא הכיוון שהולך בו הנוער. וידוע אשר נשיאי חב"ד בכל הדורות ובכל המקומות, עמוסי כמה טרדות ובעיות בעבודתם לטובת הכלל והפרט, הקדישו חלק גדול מעבודתם לחינוך וקירוב הנוער שלבעי' זו ניתן דין קדימה על כמה וכמה בעיות אחרות.

בודאי לדכוותי', אשר לבו ער לקדשי אומתנו, ואשר משרתו בתור שופט נותנת לו כשרון מיוחד לעיין בפנימיותו של האדם ומצב רוחו וכו' - למותר להאריך אשר במצב הנוכחי בארצנו הק' יש לבעי' האמורה חשיבות גדולה פי כמה מפני הקו הנוסף שנעקרו העולים ממקומות מושבותיהם שישבו שם מאות בשנים ומסדרי חיים מבוססים משך כמה וכמה דורות, ומובן אשר רובם ככלם של העולים - עולם חדש ראו בעלותם לאה"ק ת"ו, ולא לבד בנוגע להעולים במשך השנים האחרונות הדברים אמורים, אלא - במדה חשובה - כנים כל הדברים האמורים גם בדור השני בארץ ישראל.

לאשרנו פתרון הבעי' בצדה, כי בפנימיות נפש כל אחד ואחת מבני ישראל, בתור בני אברהם יצחק ויעקב, מושרשת אהבת השם ואהבת תורתו ומדות טובות בכלל, כמבואר בארוכה בספרי חסידות ומהם בספר היסודי של תורת החסידות ספר התניא, שלכן מובטחים אנו שבהשתדלות המתאימה מצוי' ההצלחה בהשפעה על הנוער לכוונו בדרך הטוב והישר. והכרה זו מוסיפה עידוד בכל העוסקים בעבודה קדושה זו.
