Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6559 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 56
By the grace of Hashem*,
17 MarCheshvan* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
May Hashem* grant that you soon announce a radical improvement of the situation (note 1: This letter was addressed to several people), which will bring about an increased commitment in everything concerning the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, in accordance with the mission entrusted to each person, in the words of the Mishnah*: "I was created to serve my Creator." This also pertains to what was said yesterday, during the meeting (note 2: Of the directors of the Yeshivos* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch. See the Rebbe*'s talk on this occasion in Likkutei Sichos*, volume 3, page 769), concerning what is timely — the Parshah* of the week: "He (note 3: Avraham, in order to welcome his guests) established an inn at Beer Sheva and he invoked there the Name of Hashem*, Elokim* of the world," "And Avraham resided in the land of the Philistines for many days." Then came the test of the sacrifice (note 4: Of Yitzchak).
Subsequently, he gave Tzedakah* "with all your might," since such is the meaning of this "inn," which enabled him to satisfy the needs of the passersby. Moreover, he planted an orchard, in order to also have fruits, providing pleasure. And the inn was meant to satisfy all needs. He also established a Sanhedrin*, which represents the summit of elevation, including in the moral domain. In this way, all the explanations given regarding his hospitality do not contradict one another (note 5: But are additive. There was, at once, a tree, an inn, and a Sanhedrin*). Now, he assumed this mission, consisting of residing in the land of the Philistines — which alludes to this material world — "for many days," throughout the entire length of the exile, of which a single instant is indeed considered "many days," unlike the good, which is "only a few days" (note 6: Which passes quickly. Thus, Yaakov worked for many years to have Rachel, but because of his love for her, these years were, in his eyes, "only a few days," according to the expression quoted here). Then he reached his goal — the sacrifice, the test that enabled him to give of his own person, in a concrete manner. This is self-evident. With my blessing to convey good news,
