Volume 18 · Letter 49

By the grace of Hashem*,

12 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 3 Cheshvan*, in which you ask me about the custom of the family of your wife, whom Hashem* will grant long life, which consists of going to the ritual bath at the start of the ninth month of pregnancy. I am not aware of such a custom among the Chabad* Chassidim*. Nevertheless, since this is the custom of your wife's family, there is no reason to prevent her from doing so, of course provided that the doctor permits it.

I reiterate my blessing that Hashem* grant her a proper and easy pregnancy, that she give birth at the right time and easily. With my blessing to convey good news,

M. Schneerson,

P.S.: You tell me that no one wants to take responsibility for the evening Yeshiva*. This is frightening, and you must therefore take it in hand again. After the campaign conducted, the numerous letters written (note 1: By the Rebbe*, on this subject), is it truly impossible to make it function? Another point is also surprising. It was already written some time ago that the married men pursuing their studies at the Yeshiva* Toras Emes (note 2: The Lubavitch Yeshiva* in Jerusalem) must arrange, for various reasons, that part of their time be devoted to Chabad* activities, particularly in the domain of teaching and education. Yet your letter seems to indicate that in this matter as well, nothing is happening. One must consider that this concerns the spreading of the wellsprings (note 3: Of Chassidus*) to the outside, and I have already written on many occasions that, according to Chassidus*, the outside begins with the emotions (note 4: Which are "external" relative to the intellect) — defined, in the service of Hashem*, as "that which is revealed for us and for our children" — by the divine soul. It is clear that this also includes the intellect and the emotions of the animal soul, or more generally, the thoughts, words, and actions of the person. You surely understand what follows from this.

You tell me that people do not attend the meetings (note 5: Those who should participate). One can grant mitigating circumstances to those who do so for the following reason. Such a situation is the consequence of the deficiency observed at previous meetings. Indeed, nothing concrete came out of them. It is customary, in such cases, for a small committee to write to those who were invited, proposing to them one action or another. When these persons respond by analyzing these proposals or formulating others, this exchange advantageously replaces the meeting that did not take place. This is self-evident.

You conclude your letter with the following phrase: "the first and last thoughts unite to form a complaint." You will deduce from what has just been said that the answer to your question is found in the well-known saying (note 6: See, on this subject, Letters no. 5412, 5434, and 6329) of our masters according to which "an action is preferable to a thousand complaints." Of course, several actions are, how much more so, preferable to a single complaint. Now, the Chassidim* are ready for such actions, but this quality lies dormant within their personality. Chassidus* defines sleep. The person who sleeps is in full possession of all his strengths, all his limbs, but he cannot act. Fortunate, therefore, is the one who awakens the sleeping and the slumbering. And a well-known commentary of the Rambam*, often cited in Chassidus*, defines this awakening: "You who sleep, awaken from your sleep. You who slumber, arise from your torpor. Examine your actions and repent. Remember your Creator." All of this alludes to those who forget the truth due to the vain occupations of the period. You will consult this text in the Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 3, paragraph 4. Whoever refuses to assume such actions — even if he deceives himself into thinking that he exercises activities of the highest importance, that he therefore does not have the necessary time, that he is not capable — must know that the true reason for his refusal is, in fact, the one stated above. Such a person forgets the truth, the words of the Mishnah* according to which: "I was created to serve my Creator" — the Halachah* emphasizing that the fulfillment of a Mitzvah* takes priority whenever one cannot entrust it to someone else, and that one interrupts one's study of the Torah* to accomplish it, even if this study is particularly elevated, as the Tosafos* indicate in tractate Moed Katan* 9b. Moreover, one forgets the truth not because one is naturally drawn to reflection, as the nature of the intellect dictates, but rather, to use the words of the Rambam*, "due to the vain occupations of the world."

This analysis should be detailed, but you know the principle of Chassidus* according to which one should develop not what enables one to put into practice "turn away from evil," but rather what belongs to the domain of "do good." This is expressed, in the words of our Sages* and according to the formulation of the Tzemach Tzedek*, by: "We are the workers of the day" (note 7: See, on this subject, Letters no. 6408, 6472, and 6686). Our role is to illuminate. With my blessing to convey good news,
