Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6549 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 46 · To: grand Rav

By the grace of Hashem*,

10 MarCheshvan* 5719,

Brooklyn,

To the great Rav*, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Chaim (note 1: Rav H. Davidowicz, of Denver),

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 8 Cheshvan*, with what was enclosed therein — that is, the donation of Mrs. Sarah Lief, intended for Torah* institutions. Your letter seems to indicate that this contribution follows the visit of Rav Telichevski. The amount has therefore been transmitted to the institution he represents (note 2: The center of the Yeshivos* Tomchei Temimim* Lubavitch, in New York). In any case, our Sages* say, in tractate Bava Kama* 92b, that "the wine belongs to its owner, but one expresses gratitude to the one who serves it." May Hashem* therefore enable you to multiply such actions and may He grant that your example be imitated by the other rabbis of the United States, who will become aware of their true mission — that of drawing the members of their community close to an authentic practice of the Torah* and the Mitzvos*. Everything else — the speeches, the visits to families — is merely accessory and has as its sole purpose the fulfillment of this mission.

And you know that, concerning a community, a shortcoming, even if it is only the size of the tip of a hair, is multiplied many times over, insofar as it concerns tens, thousands of people. This is self-evident. Now, it has been observed in the United States that, when one asks the members of the community and their families to put into practice the Torah* and the Mitzvos* without compromise (note 3: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6280) — an authentic and complete Torah* — one does not frighten them. On the contrary, they are satisfied to be told the reality as it is. And even those who are not ready to accept such a requirement as they should are nonetheless impressed upon learning of it. As a result, they accomplish, at least partially, what is asked of them. In this way, one can, from time to time, ask them for an addition, and then another. This is not the case if, from the outset, one presents them with compromises. Such was, moreover, the content of the letter I addressed to all, on the occasion of this Rosh Hashanah* (note 4: This refers to Letter no. 6499), of which I enclose a copy that will surely interest you. With my respects and my blessing,

P.S.: You will consult the Sefer HaMitzvos* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the Mitzvah* of circumcision, end of chapter 3, which mentions the principle according to which: "the wine belongs to its owner, but one expresses gratitude to the one who serves it." This is so only for one who possesses free will (note 5: And who could therefore choose not to serve it. See, on this subject, Letter no. 3472), but not... (note 6: For one who does not have free will and therefore cannot do otherwise). The importance of this notion can be deduced from what Chassidus* explains, which emphasizes that choice is truly free when it is completely unfettered — which is the case only for Jews (note 7: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6539), of whom it is said: "You are the children of Hashem* your Elokim*," Who makes a choice in a completely free manner, without any obstacle, which Hashem* forbid, since He possesses true existence. This is not the case for other beings, including the angels.
