Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter of 5 Cheshvan*, in which you tell me that doubt is insinuating itself into your heart concerning those who deny and contest certain points of the Written Torah* or the Oral Torah*. I am surprised by such a question, for you yourself introduce your letter with the words: "By the grace of Hashem*," Who gives the Torah*, Torah* of life, and its Mitzvos* to each and every one of us, within all of Israel — a Torah* delivering a teaching for life. Yet you question what is clearly expressed by our holy Torah* and is well known. What place, then, is there for doubt? The explanation, in this matter, is stated by various texts and I will cite at least one — the Rambam* in his Laws of Teshuvah*, chapter 3, paragraphs 8 and 14.
You do not tell me what your program of study of our Torah* is. I hope that it receives its proper place, that you learn the Halachos* necessary for daily life, in order to know what must be done and what is forbidden. Such is the essential mission of the Jewish person, as it is said: "To fear Hashem* and to observe His Mitzvos* is the finality of man." No doubt you are influencing your friends in this direction. במענה למכתבו מה' חשון, בו כותב אשר מנקר ספק בלבבו אודות היחס לאלו המכחישים וכופרים בענינים אשר בתורה שבכתב או אשר בתורה שבעל פה וכו'.
ולפלא, כיון שמתחיל במכתבו "ב"ה", ז.א. ברוך השם, שהוא נותן התורה, תורת חיים ומצותי', לכל אחד ואחת מאתנו בתוך כלל ישראל, תורה הנותנת הוראה בחיים, הרי גם בשאלתו הוראה מפורשת בתורתנו הק' ומפורסמת היא, ומה מקום לספק אפשרי? ונמצאת הוראה זו בכמה מקומות. ואסמן עכ"פ אחד מהם, והוא ברמב"ם הלכות תשובה פרק ג' הלכה ח' וי"ד.
אינו כותב סדר לימודו בתורתנו, אבל תקותי שבו תופס מקום מתאים - לימוד הלכות הצריכות בחיי היום יומים, בכדי לדעת את המעשה אשר יעשו ואלה אשר לא תעשינה. והרי זהו תפקידו העיקרי של איש הישראלי, כמ"ש: את האלקים ירא ואת מצותיו שמור כי זה כל האדם. ובטח משפיע גם על חביריו שי' בענין זה.
