Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6539 — Faith & Bitachon
By the grace of Hashem*,
3 MarCheshvan* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yitzchak (note 1: Mr. I. Damyel. See, on his subject, Letters no. 6309, 6876, 6898, 6959),
Greetings and blessings,
After a long interruption, I received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos Bereishis*. In fact, the Chassidim*, when they recount the customs of their ancestors in Russia, say that one would announce: "And Yaakov advances on his way" (note 2: When it is appropriate, at the conclusion of the festivals, to return to ordinary life. See, on this subject, Letters no. 782 and 783), not only at the conclusion of Simchas Torah*, but also at the end of Shabbos Bereishis*. It is then that a new period begins, in the activity of men, enabling, in particular, the fulfillment of the essential and profound mission one has received — that is, as our Sages* say in the Mishnah*, that of "serving my Creator" and building for Him a dwelling place in this lower world. As the Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe* explains in chapter 14, this mission receives an elevation each year and, in his own words, "there is revealed a lofty Light that has never yet illuminated, for the earth and for those who dwell upon it, as for all the worlds, upper and lower." It therefore falls upon the lower creatures to bring this hidden light to the fore, through their accomplishments and through their action.
You inform me of the choice before you, since you can either teach in Beer Sheva or remain where you have always been, among the youth. You have opted for the latter possibility. I share this opinion, as I have already written to you. The action carried out among the youth influences the way they will build their home afterward. Any modification in their behavior will therefore also be reflected in that home, when the time comes, for the youth have the future before them. Nevertheless, it would be good to search for and find a way to act also in Beer Sheva. For everything is an effect of Divine Providence* and, when a Jew has knowledge of a place where he can exert his influence, he must see in this the proof that this task falls upon him. Moreover, you say that you were asked to make this intervention. The connection with you is therefore so strong that another person, who also possesses free will, became aware of it.
Indeed, Chassidus* explains (note 3: See, on this subject, Letters no. 5871 and 6549) that free will is reserved for Jews, who possess a soul that is a part of true Divinity. This soul is the locus of a truly free choice, since Hashem* possesses intrinsic Existence, no cause being prior to Him, which Hashem* forbid. He is the First Existence, and that is why His choice is truly free. This is not the case for subsequent stages, except for that which is part of the Essence. Indeed, "when you hold a part of it, you hold it in its entirety" (note 4: In the words of Rabbi Saadya Gaon*, in Emunos VeDeos*). This is self-evident. Even if it is impossible to give regular, fixed classes there, you will surely find a way to visit, at set times, for example every two or three weeks. Your lecture will then have a general theme, in order to provide matter for reflection and deepening, until the next visit. Above all, you will provide the means of remaining in contact with you, in writing or by visiting you. In this way, you will be able to influence them, especially with regard to concrete action, as you say you have already done.
You tell me that you yourself need judicious discernment. You surely know that everyone indeed feels this need, as a note from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, states — printed as a report inviting the study of the Tanya* and the Chumash*. Indeed, all, from the greatest to the smallest, are identical in this regard, and each possesses a share in this study. Now, one is no longer at the beginning and, yet, one has not yet reached the final goal. It seems to me I have already written to you that this principle is established as Halachah* by the Shulchan Aruch*. Indeed, every Jew is obligated to give Tzedakah*. Of course, this is not made solely of material gold and silver. It also includes spiritual gold and silver — that is, love and fear of Hashem* — as well as everything that leads to them, the feelings that flow from them: the two hundred and forty-eight positive commandments and the three hundred and sixty-five prohibitions, as the beginning of chapter 4 of the Tanya* explains.
You make reference to the biblical contest. In my opinion, the ground is already prepared for you to propose that it cover both the Bible and the Mishnah*. There is every reason to think that this project would be accepted, for everyone appreciates something new. A biblical contest has already taken place. Of course, the subject has not been fully exhausted, and one can still do something — an addition in this matter. But if, in addition, one introduces the Mishnah*, both will conform to the principle according to which: "it is by acting in an interested manner..." (note 5: That one comes to act in a disinterested manner). One must therefore emphasize the importance of the Mishnah* and its immutable character, the way it is appreciated in circles... (note 6: Whose practice is not perfect). One must also recall, as has been said, that here indeed is something new, an addition. My deeper intention in this matter can be deduced from what I was saying at the beginning of my letter. This concerns a stage that is closer to concrete action. Another important point: our Sages* specify the difference between the Written Torah* and the Oral Torah*. Indeed, it is through the latter that we are distinguished from all other nations, as the Midrash* Shemos Rabbah*, chapter 47, paragraph 1, explains. Moreover, the last biblical contest left a very bad impression, due to the participation of missionaries. You must understand what I mean.
In this regard, one must add a point to what has just been said. The first order of the Mishnah* is, to use a worldly expression, "very current," due to the settlement of Jews in the Holy Land and the renewal of agricultural activity. As is customary in such cases, prizes are distributed in such a contest, particularly books. Of course, this practice can also be the means of transmitting authentic Judaism in the circles to which you allude. I read with pleasure in your letter what you write about your son and your daughter. May Hashem* grant that always and every day, you derive from both of them Jewish satisfaction, satisfaction that is both material and spiritual. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
