Volume 18 · Letter 30

By the grace of Hashem*,

29 Tishrei* 5719,

Brooklyn,

Greetings and blessings,

I went, on this day (note 1: Eve of Rosh Chodesh* and "minor Yom Kippur*"), to the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, and it was then that I received your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, with what was enclosed therein. You will consult, in this regard, the Yerushalmi*, tractate Berachos*, end of chapter 8, which says: "If he blessed you," as well as the response appearing in the second citation. Indeed, one may question what is reported by this text. Why say: "An answer has already been given to you twice" rather than specifying what that answer was? One could have advanced that a person is limited by what he sees with his eyes and what he hears with his ears. However, a blessing can also be that of Bilaam (note 2: Given with a wicked intention), according to tractate Sanhedrin* 105b. That is why one transmits the authority to heaven. And one cannot ask why one answers Amen* to such a blessing. Indeed, the term Amen* follows a word that is spoken, whereas "an answer has already been given to you" pertains to the intention, as the letter indicates. Certainly, the text does not explain why, when he encountered someone else and cursed him, that person also replied: "An answer has already been given to you." Indeed, it is clear that there is no need to interpret the words of an idolater, as tractate Moed Katan* 9b reports. At this reference, you will also consult the Maharsha*, as well as the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, Parshas* Bechukosai*, page 48b. One can, moreover, explain that it is not good to punish the righteous, whoever he may be. Despite all this, this passage is not yet perfectly clear.

One might consider that the answer in question here was intended to sharpen the minds of the students, but this too is difficult to accept. It seems to me, therefore, that one must advance the following interpretation, as I explained during the Chassidic* farbrengen* of this Shabbos Bereishis*, which blessed the month (note 3: Of Cheshvan*). The blessing granted by a person, whoever he may be, is necessarily limited. It is no longer so, however, when one says: "An answer has already been given to you." In such a case, this blessing emanates directly from the Source (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "You will consult, on this subject, the Chassidic* discourse entitled: 'Rabbi Yehoshua son of Levi teaches: every Kohen* who gives a blessing,' in the Sefer HaMaamarim* 5629, which has just been published"). The same applies in reverse, when it comes to fully realizing: "You shall destroy the evil." But one can still question all of this. With my blessing to convey good news,
