Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6531 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 28
By the grace of Hashem*,
26 Tishrei* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
You tell me, at the end of your letter, that you have not yet found any means of earning your livelihood. You will excuse me for saying that your formulation is not the one that would have been appropriate (note 1: Seeming to express a lack of trust in Hashem*). Indeed, it is quite clear, and one recites a blessing mentioning the Name and the Kingship of Hashem* in saying it, that "Hashem* our Elokim*, King of the world, feeds the entire world, through His goodness, His grace, His beneficence, His mercy." Certainly, the principle of the blessing after the meal is established by the Torah*, but not its formulation. Nevertheless, it is said that "the words of the Sages* are pleasing to Me," or "are more imperative." Furthermore, the first blessing of this text was established by Moshe* our master, the first to receive the Torah*, the faithful shepherd of all the children of Israel in all generations, "until the sea" (note 2: According to the words that appear at the conclusion of the Torah*), a verse about which it is said: "Do not read 'HaYam,' the sea, but 'HaYom,' this day" — that is, "the last day," according to the Sifri*, explaining this verse.
However, I grant extenuating circumstances to the expression you use, because our father Yaakov* himself raised his eyes toward the mountains and said: "From where will my help come?" But of course this is not sufficient, for a story concerning our father Yaakov* has as its purpose to deliver a teaching to those who come after him, so that if someone asks the question, he must know that our father Yaakov* has already prepared the answer: "My help comes from Hashem*." May Hashem* grant that, very soon, the blessing of Hashem* be revealed according to the formulation previously cited, in a concrete manner. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
N.B.: You do not mention your study of Chassidus*. I hope that you have a fixed time for it. At the very least, you will fix one in the future, in accordance with the well-known Injunction that one ascends in matters of holiness, in accordance with the discussion we had during our meeting.
