Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6526 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 18 · Letter 23
By the grace of Hashem*,
25 Tishrei* 5719,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter from the first day of Chol HaMoed* Sukkos*. You tell me that you are afraid to commit to being a Chabad* Chassid*, because of the heavy imperative that the study of Chassidus* constitutes. It is clear that one can give several answers to this question. The most essential reasons are the following:
A) This is not a new imperative. Day after day, on two occasions, each person accepts the yoke of the heavenly Kingship and that of the Mitzvos*, by reading the Shema Yisrael*, as the Mishnah* says in tractate Berachos*, chapter 2, Mishnah* 2. Now, this study is itself part of the yoke of the Mitzvos* which, once one accepts it, presents various aspects.
B) Furthermore, this imperative is not heavy, for the study of Chassidus*, just like that of all the other parts of the Torah*, is organized from the simplest to the most complex.
C) Subsequently, in this process, when one knows a little better the content of this teaching, its depth and, at the same time, its clarity, one has more and more desire to study it, more and more pleasure in doing so, and these two feelings transform the obligation into desire and pleasure.
You know the story concerning the Alter Rebbe* (note 1: See, on this subject, Likkutei Sichos*, volume 11, page 330), author of the Tanya*, who, when he began the dissemination of this teaching — that of Chabad* — in Russia and in Latvia, passed through Shklov, a city that was then the bastion of the opponents of this teaching and of everything connected to it. There, he ascended the platform in the great synagogue and, singing, as was his custom, he pronounced the verse: "Taste and see, for Hashem* is good: taste and you will see how good Hashem* is." His impassioned words emanated from his heart and they penetrated the hearts of those who heard him, as the Chassidim* transmit from one generation to the next, until ours. Dozens of young men therefore ran after him, who subsequently devoted themselves to the study of Chassidus* and became, in the end, pillars of the Chassidic* community.
You also fear that, because of the study of Chassidus*, you will no longer be able to concentrate on your research. You can therefore devote to this study the free time left you by this research. At first, this will be sufficient. I repeat, on multiple occasions, the necessity and the importance of this study, for each one of us has a Mitzvah* to do so and our Sages* specify (note 2: Regarding the Mitzvah* of rebuking one's fellow): "one hundred times, if need be." May Hashem* grant, in accordance with the point I developed in my letter addressed to all (note 3: This refers to Letter no. 6499) this year, on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah*, that you observe the difficulties as they truly are — that is, in all their smallness. A decision in this regard on your part, taken with strong determination, can therefore make them disappear. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news of all this,
