Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 15 Elul*, month of mercy, in which you report to me what you read in the talk delivered (note 1: On Shabbos Parshas* Re'eh 5712 (1952), published in the Likkutei Sichos*, volume 2, page 628) about the Pruzbul*, a document whose purpose is to transmit the promissory notes one possesses to the court (note 2: So that these debts are not cancelled by the Shemittah*). You report a discussion between Rashi* and the Tosafos* on this subject. You will consult, in this regard, paragraph 34 of the Laws of Lending of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah*, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah*. It is on this reference that the talk was built. In such a case (note 3: When a Pruzbul* is established), it is as if the debt had been transmitted to the court (note 4: Whose debts the Shemittah* does not cancel). It is the same if no document has been drawn up and if it is an oral loan. The Pruzbul* applies even in this case.

On this occasion, I would like to emphasize to you the necessity of observing the three well-known studies, which pertain to the Chumash*, the Tehilim*, and the Tanya*. We have heard many times from my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us, that they are beneficial in various domains. With my blessing to convey good news and for a joyous holiday,

במענה למכתבו מט"ו אלול חדש הרחמים, בו כותב ע"ד מה שקרא בשיחה בהנוגע לענין פרוזבול, שענינו הוא מסירת שטרותיו לבית דין. ומביא פלוגתת רש"י ותוס' בזה.

ויעיין הלכות הלואה לרבנו הזקן בעל התניא - (פוסק בנסתר דתורה) - והשולחן ערוך - (פוסק בנגלה דתורה), בסעיף ל"ד, שזה שמש יסוד להאמור בשיחה, כאילו מסר שטרו לבית דין כו', ואפילו אין לו שטר כלל אלא חוב בע"פ, מועיל פרוזבול.

בהזדמנות זו אעוררו על שמירת שלשת השיעורים דחומש תהלים ותניא, הידועים, אשר שמענו כמה פעמים מכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, אשר סגולה הם לכמה ענינים.
