Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6517 — Prayer
Volume 18 · Letter 13
By the grace of Hashem*,
11 Tishrei* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To all the participants in the first gathering of the year
of the Shemittah*, that of 5719, which is approaching, in the city
of Toronto, may Hashem* grant you long life,
Greetings and blessings,
I received with pleasure your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos Shuvah*, announcing the first gathering mentioned above. May Hashem* grant that this be a good beginning for this entire seventh year (note 1: That of the Shemittah*), which is a Shabbos* for Hashem*. It alludes to and is linked to the "day that will be entirely Shabbos* and rest for eternity," as the Ibn Ezra* and the Ramban* explain regarding the verse Vayikra* 25:2: "like the Shabbos*." Chassidus* explains that there is in this the most elevated phase of the reward of the World to Come, which, in general, is divided into two periods: the first, during which "they (note 2: The righteous, through the elevation they will receive as a consequence of what they accomplished in the world) will not know rest in the World to Come, ascending from one level to the next," and the second, marking the elevation to the "Shabbos* and rest for eternity."
The perfection that this world will then know depends on our actions and our accomplishments during the entire duration of the exile, as the Tanya* explains at the beginning of chapter 37. The equivalent of all this must therefore be reflected in the service of Hashem*. Of course, to achieve this, one must completely forget the concerns of the world — not only those of the material world, but also those of the spiritual world; not only those of human rationality, but also those of the logic of the domain of holiness. One must serve Hashem* beyond all rational explanation, "with all your might," or, according to the expression of our Sages*, "not for the purpose of deriving a reward" — not even a spiritual one.
Such is also the meaning of the verse: "Who is with me in heaven? I want nothing that is with You on earth," according to the interpretation given by the Alter Rebbe* (note 3: See, on this subject, Letters no. 1454 and 1549), reported in the Shoresh Mitzvas HaTefillah* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, at the end of chapter 40. Indeed, the Alter Rebbe* expressed himself thus: "I will accept nothing. I do not want Your Gan Eden*. I do not want Your World to Come. I want only You." And it is regarding this that the verse Devarim* 30:12 says: "It is not inaccessible... It (note 4: The Torah*) is not in heaven..." Moreover, as our Sages* emphasize, "if it were in heaven, one would have had to ascend there to study it." But we have been given the assurance that "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with treachery toward His creatures" (note 5: What He asks therefore cannot be impossible). It is therefore certain that one possesses the strength necessary to reach the goal. With my blessing for a joyous holiday,
