By the grace of Hashem*,

Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter of 24 Elul*, with the request for a blessing that it contained and which will be read, at a propitious moment, at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. You tell me that you intend to learn to become a Sofer*. This is quite judicious, for various reasons.

It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to you that a Sofer* must have a profound fear of Hashem*. Nevertheless, "the Holy One, blessed be He, does not act with treachery toward His creatures." He grants from the outset the possibility and the strength necessary to achieve this. Everything therefore depends only on the person who, on the contrary, can, by acting in this manner, receive increased help from Him. And, as our Sages* explain, "one who desires to purify himself is assisted." You will consult, on this subject, the Likkutei Torah*, Parshas* Devarim, page 89d. With my blessing that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

בו כותב אודות סברתו, ללמוד מלאכת סת"ם,

ונכון הדבר במאד ומכמה טעמים.

ובודאי למותר לעוררו אשר סופר סת"ם צריך להרבות ביר"ש שלו, אלא שאין הקב"ה בא בטרוניא עם בריותיו, ונותן מראש היכולת והכחות על זה, ואין הדבר תלוי אלא בהאדם, ואדרבה מוסיפין בסיוע שלו, וכמרז"ל הבא לטהר מסייעין לו, ועיין לקו"ת דברים פט, ד.
