Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter from the eve of Rosh Hashanah*. It is surely unnecessary to emphasize to you that every thought that runs counter to joy and enthusiasm does not emanate from the good inclination, as various texts explain at length, in particular the holy Tanya*, whose index at the end of the work you will consult, and the words of the Rambam* at the end of his Laws of the Lulav*. Of course, Teshuvah* itself can be joyful and enthusiastic, as these texts specify. This is one of the major aspects of the service of Hashem*, which is not merely a means of doing better, but also, according to the expression of the Rambam*, "an important accomplishment." It is unnecessary to say more, so evident is this.

I enclose a check, which is drawn on one of the funds of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, leader of Israel. You will devote this money to one of your activities or, better yet, to two of them. And Hashem* will fulfill the statement of our Sages*, expressed in tractate Bava Basra* 15b, according to which "one who takes a coin from Iyov* becomes rich," for he is: "a wholesome and upright man," just as my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, was himself. This is self-evident. Your request for a blessing will be read at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit will protect us. May Hashem* grant that, very soon, you give me good news of all this, of a visible and tangible good, above all with joy and enthusiasm. With my blessing that you be definitively sealed for a good year,

ובטח למותר להדגיש שכל המחשבות שהם היפך השמחה וטוב לבב, באים לא מהיצר טוב, וכמבואר בארוכה בכמה מקומות ומהם גם בספר תניא קדישא, וכמצוין במפתח ענינים שבסופו, ומדברי הרמב"ם סוף הלכות לולב, מובן שאפילו עניני תשובה צ"ל דוקא בשמחה ובטוב לבב, וכפי שכתוב שם, אחת מנקודות חשובות של עבודת השם, ולא סתם ענין של הידור, כי אם בלשון הרמב"ם "עבודה גדולה", והאריכות בדבר הפשוט כזה אך למותר.
