Greetings and blessings,

I am responding to your letter from the conclusion of Shabbos*, which I have just received. You communicate to me your sorrow when you remember where you were three years ago, as you were writing me a letter, and where you are now (note 1: The recipient of this letter was, presumably, three years earlier, near the Rebbe, whereas three years later, he had become his emissary in a location far from him). You will consult, on this subject, the explanation of Chassidus* on the Mishnah* which observes: "One hour of Teshuvah* and good deeds is preferable..." (note 2: To all of the World to Come), in particular in the great sequence of Chassidic* discourses entitled VeKachah* (note 3: By the Rebbe Maharash*). The central point is the commentary of the Baal Shem Tov* according to which this Teshuvah* and these good deeds are those that cause the satisfaction of Hashem*, whereas the World to Come is the satisfaction of man. One can deduce from this the distance that exists between the one and the other and to what extent this is "preferable."

It is the same for what your situation was three years ago. The satisfaction was then essentially that of man, whereas now it is that of Hashem*, through the actions you are carrying out to spread the wellsprings (note 4: Of Chassidus*). This is self-evident and goes without saying. One must therefore say that this change is "preferable." How then can one feel sorrow because of it?

You speak of geographical distance. In our days, "this is not inaccessible and not distant." In fact, "Hashem* made everything come about in its time." You speak of an engagement, and you know the ruling of our Sages* according to which: "Jewish girls are beautiful." This statement applies equally to the one you mention, in particular in recent years, when a broad positive evolution has been observed in all domains of Judaism. Each person can observe this with his own eyes. With my blessing to convey good news of all this, that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,

במענה למכתבו ממוצש"ק שנתקבל ז"ע, בו כותב ע"ד צערו כשנזכר, איפוא הי' בשעת כתיבת המכתב לפני שלש שנים, ואיפוא נמצא עכשיו.

ויעיין בהמבואר בדא"ח במשנה יפה שעה אחת בתשובה ומעש"ט, ומהם בהמשך וככה הגדול,

ונקודה התיכונה, שתשובה ומעש"ט, אלו הם הענינים הגורמים נח"ר להשי"ת, וחיי עוה"ב הם הגורמים נח"ר להאדם,

שמזה מובן, גודל הריחוק וגודל דיפה זה,

ומענין זה ה"ז ג"כ בהנוגע למצבו לפני שלש שנים שאז הי' העיקר נח"ר לאדם, ומצבו עתה שבו הוא העיקר נח"ר להשי"ת ע"י פעולותיו בהפצת המעינות חוצה, וק"ל וגם פשוט,

והאומנם על שינוי זה שהוא יפה יותר, יש לומר שח"ו מצטערים.

ובמ"ש אודות ריחוק המקום וכו', הנה בימינו אלה לא נפלאת היא ולא רחוקה היא, אלא שהאלקים עשה הכל יפה בעתו.

במ"ש אודות שידוכים, ידוע פסק רז"ל בנות ישראל יפות הן, ופשוט שגם... בכלל זה, ובפרט בשנים הכי אחרונות ששינוי גדול לטוב בעניני יהדות ניכר גם לעיני בשר.
