Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6507 — Tzedakah
Volume 18 · Letter 3 · To: jeune Its’hak(1)
By the grace of Hashem*,
3 Tishrei* 5719,
Brooklyn,
To the young Yitzchak (note 1: Rav Y. Ohayon, of Agadir, Morocco. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6373),
Greetings and blessings,
I have duly received your letter of 26 Elul* and I enclose the response I am giving to this group of orthodox youth. You will surely comment on it for them, if this proves necessary, according to their level of knowledge. It is unnecessary to emphasize that the effort to integrate new members must be a high priority, in particular for those who have already belonged to this group, according to what you write.
As you yourself note, you have already observed the fruit of the action you have carried out in this matter. May Hashem* multiply His help for your effort and for you to feel its fruit. You will advance, from one stage to the next, in the Torah* and the Mitzvos*, as well as in the influence you thus exert. With my blessing to convey good news, that you be definitively inscribed for a good year,
N.B.: You ask me about the meaning of the statement of our Sages* according to which: "one who is greater than his fellow also has a greater evil inclination." The explanation is as follows. When a person is given an important soul, a divine soul of an elevated level, his animal soul is also stronger — in its feelings and in its manifestations, that is, in the opposition it displays, for various reasons — so that one cannot claim that a person won the battle (note 2: Of good against evil) because he had an elevated divine soul and a very weak animal soul. Subsequently, when one struggles, through the forces of one's divine soul, in order to illuminate through "the candle (which) is a Mitzvah* and the Torah* (which) is a light," the process is thus set in motion according to which "the light repels the darkness" and "when one rises, the other falls." Ultimately, one can reach the stage at which one observes the disappearance of this evil inclination, when one kills it through fasting, as the holy Tanya* explains regarding David, king of Israel.
