Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6506 — Faith & Bitachon

Volume 18 · Letter 2 · To: final

By the grace of Hashem*,

Eve of Rosh Hashanah* 5719,

Brooklyn, New York,

To the attention of Dr. Yosef Goldschmidt, director of

the department of religious education of the holy city

of Jerusalem, may it be restored and rebuilt,

Greetings and blessings,

I have duly received your letter of 22 Elul*, which has just reached me. I will begin by expressing my gratitude for the interest you manifest, for your help in the past and, even more, for your promise of help for the future — not only the long-term future, but also the immediate future, for these months, on the threshold of this new school year. It is surely unnecessary to thank someone like you. Despite this, I express my warm gratitude, in accordance with the statement of our Sages* that "one encourages eagerness in those who naturally possess this quality." Now, the expression of gratitude is conducive to the eagerness through which one can multiply positive actions. I hope that you will observe such an effect yourself, in particular in domains where one must go beyond the letter of the Law and especially when one must go far beyond it.

Regarding the essential point you raise in your letter — that is, the necessity for teachers, men and women, to possess a minimum of knowledge and aptitude in education and pedagogy — it goes without saying that I share your opinion. The proof is, as you yourself observe in your letter, that this conception is put into practice right here, in the Lubavitch* Yeshivos*, and that such a requirement is concretely formulated in practice. Nevertheless, someone who has lived in the Holy Land for several years, who has seen the manner in which everything was created and made from nothing (note 1: During the establishment of the country), knows that this took time, that in order to obtain this result, one had to forgo several essential, very important points, because it was necessary to introduce fundamental acquisitions, to ensure that these be followed by concrete results. At the present time, a decade after 5708 (note 2: 1948, date of the creation of the State), a good part of what is indispensable is still in this situation. Nevertheless, one does not regret having proceeded in this manner, for it is even more important and fundamental that the situation perpetuate itself, even in its current state, with its deficiencies and its shortcomings. Consequently, I am convinced that you will adopt this approach and this conception also for the point you raise in your letter, concerning the Chabad* schools. Moreover, in the United States as well, this evolution took a few years. In Eretz Yisrael* too, one is moving in this direction, even though it is of course difficult to fix the day and the hour at which all judicious requests will be satisfied, in terms of pedagogical aptitude and knowledge.

My hope is strengthened by the fact that these are (note 3: The Chassidim teaching in the network of Ohalei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch schools in the Holy Land), in this case, young people, showing great devotion in their role as teachers and educators. For the fact of settling in remote locations (note 4: Far from any established religious community) was unthinkable, not only for themselves, but also for the milieu in which they moved — not only for economic reasons, but above all for religious reasons. Despite this, they accepted the principle of going to places where they find themselves relatively alone, in an unfamiliar environment. In the end, they did not derive from this treasures of silver and gold, nor even immense religious acquisitions, for each one of them, in his surroundings (note 5: Before going to the remote location where they currently teach), was already spreading Jewish values. Their self-sacrifice and their enthusiasm at the idea of going to these remote locations in order to educate Jewish children there were great enough to set aside the negative aspects, including the most fundamental ones. It is therefore natural that this enthusiasm prevail over the difficulties there may be in acquiring knowledge and strengthening one's pedagogy. I am convinced that practically all of them possess the means and the aptitudes in this regard. If some lack them, it is because, until now, this was of no use to them and they did not feel the need for it. I admit that the acquisition of this knowledge is not sanctioned by obtaining an official diploma. But for someone like you, especially in the situation that Eretz Yisrael* is experiencing, it is not the piece of paper called a diploma that counts, but rather the effective knowledge and, above all, the devotion for the welfare of the students.

I take the liberty of enclosing a copy of the letter I addressed to all, on the occasion of this Rosh Hashanah* (note 6: This refers to Letter no. 6499). It discusses the trust that must be granted to Jews in everything concerning faith. In my view, it is the same for the form of trust to which you allude in your letter, in the domain of education and pedagogy. In fact, this is absolutely identical, for your activity in this regard is conceived only insofar as one sees in it a command of our holy Torah*, Torah* of life.

On the occasion of the new year that is approaching, for us and for all of Israel, for good and for blessing, I address my wishes to you and to all those who follow you, that you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year, both materially and spiritually, in what concerns you personally and in your public accomplishments, which are the channels and the receptacles of the blessing of Hashem*, bringing richness, physical and moral. With my respects and my blessing,
