Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6504 — Halacha
Volume 17 · Letter 360 · [Eté 5718 ?]

You raise an objection regarding the counting of the Omer* (note 1: See on this subject Letters no. 6298 and 6415, according to which one who crosses the international date line during this period must nevertheless continue his own count of the Omer and celebrate the holiday of Shavuos* accordingly), for, you say, one must not act in such a way that people could think there are two Torahs (note 2: Which would be the case when not everyone celebrates Shavuos* on the same date). I do not understand your question. Indeed, the Torah* clearly establishes that each person must count the Omer* individually, just as it is said: "she (note 3: The woman wishing to purify herself) will count for herself," and then celebrate Shavuos* on the fiftieth day of this count. It is not the same for the counting of the Shemittah* and the Jubilee (note 4: Entrusted to the court and not to each individual), as the Tosafos* explain in tractate Menachos* 65b. In this case, the individual count is the sole means of fixing the holiday of Shavuos* (note 5: For the Torah* does not assign it a date in the calendar).
Now, you claim that this is not so and that someone could celebrate the holiday of Shavuos* on the forty-ninth day, according to his count, since one cannot exempt him from counting. A second person would do so on the fifty-first day and a third, on the fiftieth day. And many other questions arise as well. Thus, the weeks, in this case, are not complete — either because of a lack or, on the contrary, because of an addition.
You cite the Lechem Mishneh*, in chapter 7 of the Laws of the Lulav*, but he himself answers the question you mention, and you will consult it. You describe my conclusion as a "truly novel fact," but, in my humble opinion, the only novel fact here is the evidence of such a conclusion and the impossibility that it be otherwise. You have surely received, in due time, my letter responding to the questions you asked me about Tefillin*.
