Igrot Kodesh · Letter 65 — Urgency of Founding a Beit Rivkah Girls' School

To our friend, remarkable young man,

Rav Menachem Zeev [1],

I greet you and bless you,

I respond to your letters and ask you to excuse my delay. I was, indeed, occupied with the preparation of the calendar for Chabad Chassidim, which is to appear these days.

A) Some time ago, we wrote to you regarding the founding of the Beit Rivkah* and I am very surprised that this matter has been passed over in silence. Our friend, the Rashal [2] did not give us a valid reason justifying the considerable delay that has been taken. Now, each day that passes causes an irreparable loss.

How many little girls and young women could have, in the meantime, begun themselves to practice the Torah and the Mitzvot and guide others in the right direction? The good education dispensed by Beit Rivkah has proven the behavioral change it induces. And Chassidut establishes that if a single girl pronounces, thanks to this education, one additional blessing beyond her habit, she has thereby united herself profoundly with the Will of Hashem. Now, above, such a union is eternal.

Certainly, one may ask why this is so, but the Admor HaZaken* bears testimony that this is indeed the case and the Halachah stipulates that a man must consider that he, as well as the entire world, is on a balanced scale that a single action can tip to the good side. Why then delay all this?

My purpose is in no way to moralize or reproach you, which Hashem forbid. I am, nevertheless, very surprised by your way of approaching this problem. I therefore speak of it in a letter addressed to you, because it is you who asked me the question on behalf of all the former students of the Yeshivah.

B) Please let me know what decision was finally taken regarding the young man from Vancouver [3]. I could, in this regard, renew the remark made in the previous paragraph. Providing for the needs of a young man is therefore such a difficult problem that you could not find the means to resolve it?

C) Your instructions regarding the sending of packages arrived late and they will be taken into account in the future.

D) Your request was sent to the periodical HaKriah VeHaKedushah* and the money was transmitted to it in due time. Your request to Rav A. P. [4] has also reached him. It is surely unnecessary to explain to you the importance of paying your debts. Indeed, the lack of money is currently blocking several publications.

E) I urgently ask you to continue writing the memoirs and to return to me the report that I sent you so that a copy may be made.

F) How did the dissemination of the conversations with young people in secondary schools go?

I will conclude by evoking the practice of the present period, the Mitzvah of the half Shekel*. It is said that the rich gives no more and the poor, no less. And tractate Megillah emphasizes that, through this Mitzvah, the Jews succeeded in counterbalancing the coins that Haman offered in exchange for their lives. He himself wanted to exterminate all the Jews without any distinction and they were saved because they were ready to offer their lives for Hashem. From this point of view, all Jews, including the simplest, are indeed identical. In relation to Him, all are insignificant.

May Hashem grant us to merit, very soon and in our days, the coming of our righteous Mashiach, who will come when one does not think of him. Then, the hidden part of the heart will be revealed, in relation to which all are identical, from the greatest to the smallest.

בתשובה על מכתביו, ואתו הסליחה על האחור והסבה טרדתי בסדור הלוח לחסידי חב"ד שיו"ל ימים אלו.

א) זה מכבר כתבנו להם ע"ד יסוד "בית רבקה", ולפלא גדול שעוברים בשתיקה על כל שאלה זו, ומידידנו כו' מהרש"ל שי' ג"כ לא שמענו טעם מספיק לדיחוי הדבר זמן רב כ"כ, והרי כל יום שעובר הוא אבדה שאינה חוזרת, וכמה ילדות ונערות היו יכולות להעשות בינתיים - בנוגע לעצמן - שומרות תומ"צ - ובנוגע להשפעה על אחרים - מופת וסמל בשנוי הנעשה בהנהגתן ע"י חנוך הראוי בבית רבקה, ובפרט ע"פ המבואר בדא"ח, הנה לו יהא שע"י חנוך הנ"ל, היתה נערה אחת עושה ברכה אחת במשך כל העת נוסף על הרגיל אבל עי"ז נתאחדה בתכלית היחוד ברצה"ע כו' ויחוד זה למעלה הוא נצחי לעולם ועד, ואף שצריך להבין איך הוא זה, אבל אדה"ז מעיד שכן הוא וגם ידוע פס"ד להלכה, שיראה אדם עצמו וכל העולם שקול וע"י מצוה א' כו' (רמב"ם תשובה ג, ד) איז אויף ווען לייגט מען עס אפ? ולא שח"ו וח"ו רצוני לומר מוסר ודברי תוכחה, אבל פלא בעיני יחסם לכל ענין זה, וכותב אני זה במכתבי אליו, כיון שהוא הי' העונה על שאלה זו בשם כל התמימים.

ב) מטובו להודיענו מה הי' סוף דבר ע"ד הבחור... מונקובער וגם בזה יש להעיר ככהנ"ל בשאלה א. והאומנם ענין הספקת והחזקת נער אחד הוא דבר קשה כ"כ שא"א לפותרו.

ג) הוראתו באופן שילוח החבילות נתאחרה, ולהבא יושלח כמש"כ.

ד) בקשתו להקוה"ק והמעות בעתם נמסרו, וכן להרא"פ שי', ומוסג"פ חשבונו, ולמותר - בודאי - לזרזו ע"ד סילוק החוב, כי חסרון כסף מעכב עתה הדפסת איזה דברים.

ה) בקשה רבה להמשיך רשימת הזכרונות, ולהחזיר לי הר"ד ששלחתי לו להעתיקה.

ו) מה היו תוצאות הפצת השמועסן בהאי-סקול?

ואסיים במנהג היום זכר למצות מחצית השקל: אופנה, העשיר לא ירבה והדל לא ימעיט, הכל שוין, וע"י מחצה"ש בטלו שקלי המן (מגילה יג, ב) שגם גזירתו היתה על כל היהודים בשוה מנער כו' - ועיין שיחת פורים תש"א בזה - וניצולו ע"י שהיו בתנועות מס"נ, שגם בזה הכל שווין שאפי' קשב"ק כו' - כמ"ש בסש"ב פי"ט כ' - והכל כפתיים אצלו ית' ולא ידעי. והשי"ת יזכנו ב"ב לביאת מ"צ הבא בהיסח הדעת (סנהדרין צז, א) וכמש"כ באגה"ק ס"ד שזהו גילוי בחינת נקודת פנימיות הלב, שמצד זה כל ישראל למגדול ועד קטן, כולן מתאימות ואב אחד לכולנה וכמ"ש סש"ב פל"ב (משא"כ מצד מקורן בא"ח דחלוקין בגדולתן ומעלתן).
