Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6386 — Community
Volume 17 · Letter 242 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
13 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and
devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yechezkel (note 1: Rav Y. Hartmann, of St. Louis),
Greetings and blessings,
After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter from the eve of 12 Tammuz*, the festival of liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. You ask me about the Bas Mitzvah*. In recent years, indeed, it is celebrated even in circles where Hashem* is feared, to the point of having become a practically unavoidable custom. Your question is therefore how to organize it in the best possible manner. You specify that one customarily fixes it on a Friday evening. You are no doubt alluding to the evening of Shabbos*.
If I had the power, I would have suppressed, in this country, the choice of that evening. Indeed, one already laments that a Bar Mitzvah* is celebrated during Shabbos*, because of the Torah* reading. One knows the disadvantages that result from this, in particular the overt transgression of the holy Shabbos* that is thus occasioned. This is what one calls a Jew's acceptance of the yoke of the mitzvos* and that of the Torah*! Naturally, there is therefore good reason to fear what will happen in such a case, when a celebration is held on Friday evening or even during the day of Shabbos*. Certainly, it will happen that no transgression of Shabbos* results, which Hashem* forbid. But this will be so only at a certain time and in a specific place. On the other hand, who can guarantee that the same will hold true in the near future and especially in distant places? One may have the greatest doubt about this. This is self-evident and it is unnecessary to say more. I have already discussed this subject with Rabbanim* and I asked them what was the custom of their synagogue, and I told them that, to the extent possible, they should endeavor to celebrate the Bar Mitzvos*, not on Shabbos*, but during the week, for this reason (note 2: To avoid the transgression of Shabbos*).
Likewise, one must endeavor, to every extent possible, not to choose Sunday either. Indeed, it is scandalous and shameful to observe that numerous Jewish celebrations are fixed on that day, because everyone is then free from their commercial and professional obligations. But in this way, importance is conferred upon the day of their festival, which Hashem* forbid. Nevertheless, at the present time, this is still a decision to which the majority of the community will not be able to adhere. They themselves have the merit of having forgotten that this day is that of their festival, and hardly anyone pays attention to it anymore. Regarding new practices, however, it would be good, from the outset, not to engage in all of this and to do nothing on that day. But "the gates of justification have not been closed" (note 3: So that one can always imagine an explanation to justify that a celebration be fixed on Sunday).
Of course, I do not address here the question proper of celebrating a Bas Mitzvah*, since it seems that this was not your question. You were referring to the current situation of your community and you were asking which evening to choose. The following remark is surely unnecessary. I write it to you, nevertheless, in order to underscore its importance, given the incidents that have occurred during the celebration of several Bas Mitzvos*. Indeed, some arrange for singing during these ceremonies and, due to our many transgressions, this is done even in the presence of men. The Bas Mitzvah* girl and her friends participate as well. Now, in this matter, one cannot make concessions, for the Shulchan Aruch* states the halachah* on this matter, according to which there is an absolute prohibition.
I have learned that you have become a member of the city council, and may Hashem* grant that you use the influence you have acquired until now, as well as that which you will receive through this appointment, in order to redouble your ardor in propagating the Torah* of truth without concessions (note 4: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6280). Indeed, truth and concession are totally antithetical. You will therefore do so in ever-wider circles, beginning with your own community, in which you hold official functions, in your city, whose council you have just joined, and outside your city. Indeed, all Jews form one great organism and a lack in a certain place is also felt in all the others. Now, "the Attribute of good is stronger..." (note 5: Than that of misfortune), and the addition can be effective in every place. It follows that every effort, every initiative is justified, for it concerns, in this case, the entire people of Israel and each individual who constitutes it. This is self-evident. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
