By the grace of Hashem*,
13 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
After a particularly long interruption, I have received your letter from the eve of Shabbos* Parshas* Shelach* and I will mention your name at the holy resting place of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, for all that you mention. May Hashem* grant that you convey good news of it. Regarding the tzedakah* of the year (note 1: A sum given by a person, based on the number of days in the year, so that tzedakah* is taken each day in his name), you have a doubt because you gave your contribution in the middle of the year (note 2: And not at the beginning, so as to be included in the daily giving). I am surprised by your question, for it seems that you have not seen the discourse relating to this tzedakah*. This text specifies that it must be connected to what is explained at the beginning of the second chapter of the tractate Shekalim*, the reference that you yourself mention. Indeed, one collected from them (note 3: The half-Shekalim* destined to finance the perpetual sacrifices) also on account of what would be paid subsequently, which means that the latecomers are indeed included in the tzedakah* given since Rosh Hashanah*, even if one has, in such a case, lost the quality of eagerness, which is defined by various texts, in particular chapter 21 of Iggeres HaKodesh*, of the Alter Rebbe*.
You say, in passing, that you endeavor to eat less. Now, it is surely unnecessary to remind you of what the Rambam* specifies at the beginning of chapter 4 of his Laws of Opinions: "Having a healthy and whole body is among the ways of Hashem*." And one can verify concretely that this is indeed so and that questionable physical health prevents one from devoting oneself to the service of Hashem* as one should. This is self-evident. You surely know of the festival of liberation of 12 and 13 Tammuz*, the deliverance of our master and head, the head of all Israel. You have participated or will participate in the Chassidic* gatherings organized on the occasion of these propitious days. And you put into practice the directives of the one whose joy we celebrate, my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us, by maintaining the three well-known studies, which concern the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. With my blessing to convey good news,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
