By the grace of Hashem*,
8 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Greetings and blessings,
I am responding to your letter from after Shabbos*. You ask me the following question. In the place where you work, layoffs are being prepared, though your turn has not yet arrived. You therefore ask whether you should resign in order to receive compensation and, in this way, pay your debts. I am somewhat surprised by this, for from what one hears, anyone who has held a position in the Holy Land for some years endeavors to keep it and is not attracted by the compensation. It is certain that you will not lose it, even if it is paid later. In fact, you say that your wife does not wish you to make your profession of education based on sacred values. This is, of course, astonishing, and you will no doubt explain the reason for this in your next letter.
You ask for participation covering one-third of the travel expenses. This will be granted to you, without making it a vow, but such a request is surprising, for it seems that the financial situation of the Chabad* youth association has not evolved in several years. One observes no positive evolution and perhaps the opposite is even true. This is all the more astonishing when one observes that several organizations in the Holy Land, having a priori no support, have been able to achieve their autonomy, including in the financial domain. Yet, to my great pain, the Chabad* youth association has been receiving assistance for several years, but nothing moves! Perhaps one may advance the following element of explanation. It is known that one can, without effort, receive a portion of the funding. Therefore, why adopt a different manner of acting? Now, it is clear that such an attitude is totally unjustified, for two reasons. On the one hand, if one endeavored to acquire other means, one could greatly expand the activities. Furthermore, and this is essential, one can understand that the funds that must be devoted to the Chabad* youth association, but which they could have procured by their own means, cause a lack in important domains of action.
Of course, the preceding paragraph is addressed to all the members of the Chabad* youth association, not only in Tel Aviv but also in all the groups. The same applies to Chabad* women and young women, even if one may grant mitigating circumstances to the latter, according to the statement of our Sages* that a virtuous woman fulfills the will of her husband. With my blessing to convey good news,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
E. Kwint,
