Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6361 — Shidduchim
Volume 17 · Letter 217
By the grace of Hashem*,
4 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To Mr. Binyamin (note 1: B. Servya, of Brooklyn),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I received your letter with pleasure. You announce to me good news. You are offered the opportunity to organize the activities of the youth in the synagogue of which you are the director, to speak to them about the Torah* and Judaism, to invite them to frequent this synagogue more often. It is surely unnecessary to remind you that, if such an activity has always been a necessity, how much more so is it in this period of the heel of Mashiach*. Moreover, among the youth, every positive development will change the manner in which they build their home, when the time of their marriage comes. In this way, it will have an influence on all the generations. Every effort, every intervention in this domain is therefore justified.
In this regard, I have already explained that the youth in the United States, at every age and in every milieu, must study the laws necessary for daily life and may Hashem* grant that the adults and the elders also adopt such a study. Indeed, the ignorance and the lack of knowledge of the youngest, regarding the blessings, the prayer, the observance of Shabbos*, are completely appalling. And, one can observe the profoundly negative consequences that this can have. This is self-evident. Even if the time to be devoted to this is not the same in every milieu, such a study is, in any case, indispensable. One must motivate the students and invite them to eagerness, so that they review these laws when they have free time. Moreover, the abridged Shulchan Aruch* is translated into the language of this country, in English.
Although you say nothing about it, I hope that you have a fixed time for studying Chassidus*, as we discussed, and that you increase it from time to time, in conformity with the Injunction of our Sages* according to which one knows elevation in the domain of holiness. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
N.B.: Regarding the audience (note 2: With the Rebbe*, requested by the addressee of this letter), you will schedule the appropriate time with my secretariat.
