Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6359 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 215
By the grace of Hashem*,
4 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
After a long interruption, I have received your letter of 21 Sivan*. You ask me about the possibility of speaking during the reading of the Torah*. I am surprised that such a question must be addressed to another continent. And, I am even more astonished that some neglect this principle (note 1: And speak during the reading of the Torah*), citing various proofs in support, whereas one knows the words of the Rebbe Rashab* which are, moreover, printed in the collection of his letters (note 2: See his Igros Kodesh*, volume 1, Letter no. 67) and, above all, what the Yair Nativ* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, says. I reproduce here the explanation of his father, the Rebbe Rashab*, whose merit protects us: "It is clear that one who listens to the reading of the Torah* in the proper manner fulfills a mitzvah* of Hashem* and, moreover, thanks to the honor thus paid to the Torah*, it invokes divine mercy for the man and for the members of his family, spiritually and materially." Introducing his words, he further says: "One shall take great care not to speak and not to converse during the reading of the Torah*."
You make reference to the Chassidic* gathering and to what should be repaired in this regard. It is clear that this is not the case. Every action, small or great, must be accepted by submission, as a heavenly Decree. The Holy One, blessed be He, Himself, Creator of this world, arranged that a part of His Torah* be accessible through rationality. In fact, everything that enables one to bond with one's fellow, within all of Israel, must be logical, especially regarding Chabad*. For, if one who passes in front of a perfumery smells a good fragrance, how much more so for one who spends some time there, some years, sometimes even at the risk of his life (note 3: As was the case in Russia). He can thus be imbued with it even more deeply. And, it is almost certain that, if the elder Chassidim* explained these ideas and specified what is necessary, it would be accepted more easily than one imagines. For, the assurance has been given that words emanating from the heart penetrate into the heart, all the more so that the merit of the public comes to your aid, in particular in Kfar Chabad* which, as has been underscored many times, must set the example of a Chabad* village. This is self-evident. Of course, these remarks also apply to the public teachings delivered there. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,
