I am responding to your letter of 22 Sivan*, with the requests for a blessing that were enclosed therein. You envision an operation (note 1: See, on this subject, Letter no. 6429), but you do not specify which one. Perhaps it is a lobotomy (note 2: A serious brain operation; in English in the text, "lobotomy"). This proposal does not suit me, at least for the time being. Very often, indeed, such operations have not met with great success. One must therefore, beforehand, try all the other possibilities. In fact, various pills (note 3: In English in the text, "pil") and modern treatments that are currently used do not exercise their effect until after a year or two. It would be good for the treating physician to write a detailed letter, as is done between colleagues, in order to specify what treatment has been administered to this woman until now. You will show this report to a specialist physician located here.

We have entered the month of Tammuz*, that of the deliverance of our master, head of Israel, and "the body follows the head." May Hashem* therefore grant that, in its entirety and down to its heel, this body receive what the head gives it. May each person thus be liberated from all that hinders him and thus be in a position to serve Hashem* with complete joy and enthusiasm. With my blessing to convey good news of all this,

במענה למכתבו מכ"כ סיון, עם הפ"נ המוסגרים בו, בו כותב אודות הסברא לעשות נתוח, אבל אינו מפרש ענין הנתוח ואפשר הכוונה להנתוח הנקרא Lobotomy ואם כן אינו נראה לי הדבר עכ"פ לעת עתה, כי הרי לפעמים הכי תכופות לא הצליח כ"כ ע"ע בנתוח, שמזה מובן שצריך לנסות בכל האופנים האפשרים מקודם לזה והרי ידוע שכמה מהכדורים (פילן) ובכלל אופני הטפול החדישים שמשתמשים בהם עתה, ישנם כאלה שפעולתם ניכר לאחרי שנה ושנתיים וכדאי הי' אשר הרופא המטפל יכתוב בפרטיות כדרך הרופאים שכותבים אחד לחבירו, בהנוגע תחי' הטפול שעשו עד עתה וכו', ויראו כתב זה להמומחה במקצוע אשר בכאן.

ויהי רצון שכיון שנכנסנו לחדש תמוז הוא חדש הגאולה של רבנו נשיאנו ראש ישראל, וגופא בתר רישא אזיל, הנה הגוף בכל הקומה שלו ועד העקבתא ימשיך מן הראש ככל הדרוש ויגאל כאו"א מכל הענינים המבלבלים ויוכלו לעבוד השי"ת בשמחה שלימה ובטוב לבב.
