Volume 17 · Letter 213 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu

By the grace of Hashem*,

4 Tammuz* 5718,

Brooklyn,

To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, Rav Avraham Moshe (note 1: Rav A. M. Greenberg, of Bnei Brak*. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6168),

Shalom* u'vracha*,

I am responding to your letter of 29 Sivan*, in which you ask me about what I wrote in my own letter (note 2: This refers to Letter no. 6300), regarding the definition of Gan Eden*, according to the Rambam*. He says, indeed, in his commentary on the Mishnah*, in tractate Sanhedrin*, that Gan Eden* is "the fattest and richest part of the earth." You cite, in addition, various texts that deal with Gan Eden*. Several books define these concepts. Nevertheless, I will recall them briefly here.

There are several levels of Gan Eden*. The lowest, the one mentioned by the verses at the beginning of the Torah*, is found in our world, for a verse cannot be separated from its plain meaning. Now, in these verses, it is indeed a question of fruits that can be consumed materially. It is to this that the Rambam* alludes, in this commentary on the Mishnah*. This Gan Eden* was created with the rest of the world, as these verses indicate, but, according to the Rambam*, it was hidden subsequently and it will be revealed again in the world to come. At a higher stage, there is also a Gan Eden* that is not material, which therefore concerns souls without bodies. In general, this comprises two levels, the lower Gan Eden* and the upper. Several texts deal at length with both, in particular the Zohar*, volume 2, from page 210. You will consult it and you will see that it is indeed a question of souls without bodies. However, the lower Gan Eden* and the upper each comprise several stages, as the passage of the Likkutei Torah* that you reproduced in your previous letter specifies.

Furthermore, one must distinguish another concept, which is that of the world to come. One finds, on this subject, a controversy between the Rambam* and the Ramban*, set forth in the Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe*, at Parshas* Tzav*, page 15c. According to the Rambam*, it is indeed a world of souls without bodies. In contrast, what is said at the beginning of chapter Chelek* (note 3: In tractate Sanhedrin*) is a different idea and, in this text, reference is indeed made to souls found in bodies, as you will be able to observe. For the Ramban*, on the other hand, it is indeed a question of souls being in bodies, as will be the case after the resurrection of the dead. According to this interpretation, there is no longer any contradiction between the texts you cite in your letter. In fact, I have already written an analysis of all of this (note 4: This refers to Letter no. 200) and it has been published in the Kovetz Lubavitch, issues 9 and 10. Someone must surely possess a copy, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. With my blessing to convey good news,

On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,

the secretary,
