Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6353 — Tzedakah
Volume 17 · Letter 209 · To: grand Rav
By the grace of Hashem*,
1 Tammuz* 5718,
Brooklyn,
To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem* and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shmuel (note 1: Rav S. Yalow, of Syracuse. See, on his subject, Letter no. 6144),
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I have learned with pleasure from my brother-in-law, the Rav, shlita* (note 2: Rav Shmaryahu Gur Aryeh), that you received him with benevolence and that you multiplied your efforts during his visit to your city, in Syracuse. It is no doubt unnecessary to thank someone like you, all the more so since, our Sages* say, "the reward of the mitzvah* is the mitzvah* itself." Moreover, Chassidus* underscores that mitzvah* is of the same etymology as Tzavta*, the bond, which means that the true reward, the most important, is the simple fact of having put the mitzvah* into practice, which creates a bond, a relationship between the One Who commands it, the Creator, and the creature, whereas the One and the other have nothing in common. I express the wish not only that this benevolence will continue, but also that it will expand, since it involves, in this case, strengthening an institution of Torah* (note 3: Carrying out a collection for the Yeshivah* Lubavitch) and we have been enjoined to know elevation in the domain of holiness.
My brother-in-law also informed me of your intervention in the discussion with Mr. Shapiro. He told me that it had a follow-up and that one must therefore be vigilant so that this follow-up is positive, through to its conclusion. The importance of all this (note 4: The Rebbe* notes at the bottom of the page: "You will consult the Yerushalmi*, tractate Rosh Hashanah*, end of chapter 1, paragraph 4, according to which the necessity of bringing the end of the mitzvah* close to its beginning has the effect of overriding the Shabbos* in the form of its beginning") is established by the teaching of our Sages* according to which the mitzvah* bears the name of the one who brings it to its completion. Consequently, I am certain that you will do all that is necessary, and even more than that, so that this is indeed the case.
We are in the month of Tammuz*, that of the liberation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe*, whose merit protects us. May each person therefore be liberated, within all of Israel, from all that troubles him and may an increased blessing be revealed, success in all communal and personal accomplishments, the one depending on the other. With my respects and my blessing to convey good news,
