Volume 3 · Letter 241

By the grace of Hashem,

3 Tammuz 5710,

Brooklyn, New York,

Many are those[1] who seek to define the qualities, in different areas, of the leaders of Chabad in general and of the leader of our generation, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in particular — a man full of self-sacrifice, a Torah scholar, who attained moral perfection, a tzaddik, possessing Ruach HaKodesh*, performing miracles, and many other things.[2]

These praises are all the more considerable, if one considers the definition of self-sacrifice and erudition that Chassidus* gives.

Nonetheless, the essential has been omitted from this list. For one fundamental point is more important because it is more decisive, in particular for us, his Chassidim, who are attached to him. This point is the following: he is the leader (Nasi*), and a Nasi of Chabad.

In general, the Nasi is defined as the head[3] of the children of Israel, in relation to whom he is effectively the head and the brain, granting them existence and vitality. It is by binding oneself to him that one can identify oneself with his heavenly source, in its highest level.

There are different categories of leaders.[4] Some exercise a profound influence; others maintain themselves at a more global level. Likewise, their influence may be exercised in the revealed part of Torah, or in its esoteric dimension, or in both at once. They may teach the ways of Chassidus or grant material blessings.

Some have combined several of these aspects, or even all at once.[5]

Such has always been the conduct of the leaders of Chabad, from the Alter Rebbe down to my father-in-law, the Rebbe. They possessed all of these qualities, influenced both in a profound and a global manner, guided in Torah, prayer, and good deeds, spiritually and materially.

They were therefore attached to their disciples through all the 613 limbs of their soul and through those of their body.

Each and every one of us must know, meditate upon, and keep present in mind that he is the Nasi, the head, granting all material and spiritual blessings. In his letters, he showed us how and in what manner to attach oneself to him.[6] In doing so, one unifies oneself with his primary origin, up to its highest source.
