Igrot Kodesh · Letter 6347 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 17 · Letter 203
By the grace of Hashem*,
28 Sivan* 5718,
Brooklyn,
Shalom* u'vracha*,
I am responding to your letter of 20 Sivan*, in which you ask me in what place you should continue your studies in the near future. Of course, it is judicious and very positive to devote all your time to sacred studies. At your age, this is fundamental. In the words of Chassidus*, the brain must be filled only with what concerns our holy Torah*, the Torah* of life of the King, King of kings, the Holy One, blessed be He. Regarding the study of the Torah*, you know that, according to the Halachah*, it is not possible to postpone it to tomorrow or the day after, for a specific obligation pertains to each day, which must be filled with its own obligation and therefore cannot make up for what was lacking yesterday or the day before. In these last generations and especially in these last years, in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt, of which it is said that: "the eyes of Hashem* are always turned toward it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year," it is also indispensable to study the profound dimension of the Torah*, as the holy Zohar* and, more precisely, Rabbi Chaim Vital*, in his introduction to Shaar HaHakdamos*, explain, as well as the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*, at chapter 26 of Iggeres HaKodesh* and various other texts, underscoring also how important and imperative this is for the success of the study of the revealed part of the Torah* and the practice of the mitzvos*.
You ask me in what manner to influence those whom you see distancing themselves from the path of the Torah* and the mitzvos*. You know that it is a mitzvah* to formulate reproofs to one's fellow. One must, however, do so in a pleasant manner, imbuing oneself with love for him. Thus, one succeeds better and faster. Of course, you will not content yourself with speaking to them yourself. You will find friends and acquaintances who will also influence them in this direction. You also mention the thoughts that trouble you during prayer. Your Tefillin* should be checked, to ensure that they are kosher*, in conformity with the Halachah*. Likewise, each weekday, before the morning prayer, you will give a few coins to tzedakah*. After the prayer, including on Shabbos* and the festivals, you will read Tehillim* according to their monthly distribution. Of course, you will adopt all of this without making it a vow. With my blessing to convey good news,
On behalf of the Rebbe, shlita*,
the secretary,
